The light is fine, that's not a problem at all. If the fish is in a fairly small bowl his location next to a door can sometimes cause temperature fluctuations in the water that's not really good for the fish. You might consider moving him during the cold weather if you use this door often.

They're right. If your betta tank is right next to an outside door, that's not a good spot for him. He has to breathe the air you breathe, and if it's too cold for him, it can get sick.
As far as temp of the water, bettas can live anywhere between 70-85 or so. I've read that a betta kept in cooler water lives longer than one who's kept at 80 degrees where they thrive. It slows down their metabolism when the water is cooler, so they age slower.
I don't suppose the coffee table light would be a bad thing. Light is light. As long as he's got his dark times, and maybe the light warms him up a bit during the day, it wouldn't matter. Just be careful about placement. If you accidently knock the lamp into the tank, well, I don't have to explain how bad that would be for your little guy... lol Plus since it's right near a door, you (or a guest) don't want to accidently knock him off the table. Say, blindly in the dark, trying to find the lightswitch, and - oops! Ya never know...
Good luck with him!

A betta needs to have water temperatures around 76-82 to be happy. They can live outside this range, but too high, or too low, and they will become lethargic. Your table light will not matter to the betta as a source of light (and it only matters as a source of heat if it changes the water temperature). They can live without a heater/light if the room is warm enough, but if not, you will need to find a way of raising his temperature.

One thing that I noticed is that you said he's on a table right by a door. Is this an outside door? It might be best if you move him to another part of the room - if it's cold outside, he's going to get a draft every time the door opens. It would be better to put him somewhere where the temperature will be more stable.

how cold is it in your place? if you keep it below 70 you should probably get a small tank with heater.

if you are trying to warm him with the lamp that should work some. its not a cure if your home is 55 degrees though. i keep giving advice on these things and i forget not everyone lives in florida.

the warmest spot in your house for him is probably up on a tall bookcase or kitchen cabinets. he is fine wintering on top of kitchen cabinets -- they don't care that much where their bowl is placed -- you just need to crawl up there to feed him.

Betas are remarkably tolerant to all kinds of conditions.
You do NOT need an aquarium light for them. Coffee table light is good, but make sure the fish gets enough dark hours so it can sleep. Yes, fish DO sleep, and they require darkness for it.
Ambient temperature that keeps YOU comfortable is enough for your Beta, too.

He's a tropical fish, his water needs to be in the 80's at all times.
