How old are the characters in Friends in relation to each other? Obviously Ross is older than Monica and Chandler is the same age as Ross, and Monica is the same age as Rachel, but what about Phoebe and Joey?

They changed the ages of the characters as the series progressed so they wouldn't be too old for the target audience.
The Friends gang's ages become muddy towards the end of the show. In Season One, when Monica was dating young Ethan, she says she's 26. Since Rachel was in the same school year as her, Rachel must be 26, +/- 1 year. However, Rachel turns 30 in the middle of Season Seven, which simply does not add up. Moreover, in the episode in which Rachel says goodbye to everyone, she says to Monica "the last ten years...", which clearly indicates that the show is supposedly on real time.
Rachel, Ross and Phoebe's birthdays have all changed during the series:
Rachel says her birthday is May 5 during Season Four, and in Season Seven her birthday is supposed to be ten days before Monica and Chandler's wedding on May 15; however, her birthday is shown about half a season before the wedding; in the Season 9 Episode "The One with Phoebe's Rats", her birthday appears to be in the winter.
Ross says in "The One with Joey's New Girlfriend" that his birthday is in December, yet in "The One Where Emma Cries" he tells Joey that it is October 18; in "The One with George Stephanopoulos", Chandler and Joey bring Ross tickets as a "birthday present" and Ross replies, "Funny, my birthday was seven months ago." He then realizes that the date is October 20, implying that his birthday is in fact in March; this could mean that he was previously lying about his birthday being in October, yet Chandler and Joey still believed him.
Phoebe tells her brother in Season Three that her birthday is February 16, but in Season Nine it is changed to the same week as Halloween in October.
