I've seen many people answer a question with an answer that calls the asker "dear" or "sweetie". Am I the only one who thinks that's a little derogatory or rude?
...And yes, I know I'm going to get 15 answers that say, "Of course not, sweetie".

I don't mean in real life. I mean the complete strangers who answer questions on this site, like this: "The answer is 42; everyone learns that in second grade, sweetie."

Or this, this is a common reply to a good, average, correctly-spelled question: "Next time you should ask a more intelligent question, sweetie. We don't understand you."

i dont think it is derogatory at all...some people just do that...its the same as people who blow thier nose at their desk in the office while you are eating 2 desks over instead of excusing themselves to the bathroom...its may be irritating tou you, but it is just something they do.
i doubt anyone is trying to downtalk you or anything, some people just talk like that...i know i am guilty of it...
sorry if i have ever offended you as that was not in any way my intention

It may be seen as condescending depending upon the context, but if you're getting "sweetie" a lot, figure out why. People are forming opinions about you based on your question and your avatar. Take a look at the big picture; you may be sending a message you don't intend.

Doesn't it all depend on who says it to you? If it's a complete stranger, then you could interpret it as a sexist comment. Some of my best friends call me that and it doesn't bother me, but, a guy in a bar? Someone just out looking to get laid.

I think it might be rude if they mean to make fun of you. But, I've used it myself in answering questions that need support. I'd like to hear that if I needed support.

LOL,,,,,,,,,I don't think it is meant to be taken personally, it is just a form of humanity to a cold , dank , cyber society . Enjoy the recognition and just let it be .

Yes it bothers me and i let people who call me thoe names know VERY quickly that "I" draw the line when it comes to talking to me. i agree that we teach others how to treat us...and so i do.
