I live in Washington. There are 2 very different sides to the state and I have lived on both. West of the mountains is Seattle, contrary to popular notions, it doesn't rain as much as you'd think. I think that summer in Seattle is one of the most beautiful I have seen. The temp stays around 70, warm, but not hot, cool, but not chilly. Very comfortable. The view is amazing, we have Mt. Ranier which is a blessing to see on a clear summer day, it takes my breath away. There is water all over the place, beautiful beaches... no swimming really, it's not that warm. :) There are a lot of outside activities, many bikers and skaters. Green Lake is a great little park, a 2.5 mile loop for walking, biking, blading etc. around with sport fields to play on too. Seattle in the winter is more icky and rainy. I'd highly recommend summer in Seattle.
On the other side of the mountains, which is the majority of the land in the state, it is more hot and dry. I live in Wenatchee, dead center. It used to be all fruit trees, now in the last 4 years it has become more vineyards and wine country. Summers can get over 100 degrees, there is a lot of water sports. Boating, skiing, etc. A few nice beaches where swimming on the Columbia river is a great treat for the kids. Lake Chelan is nearby, a very popular destination for summer fun seekers. Leavenworth, also just up the road is a popular Bavarian themed tourist city. Winter around here gets down below 0 and there is usually plenty of snow. Mission Ridge is a ski area up on the hill. I'm not a winter person, so I don't like it. :)
