I'm a part filipino but i love my perfect tan skin color. my color is more like Nicole of Pussycat dolls, but some of filipinos hate tan or even bronze as they're trying hard to be pale like christina aguilera.

It is easier to get a tan than white which is why the whites wonder.
From being tan, I think it is better to get whitier than to get darker.

Man, this really drives me crazy also, because when you go to the beaches there the girls have sweaters and long pants on with big hats and sunscreen to boot. A simple answer is if you are light skinned it shows you are higher class because it does not appear that you have to work in the fields. I know, it is more complex than that, but that is the short answer. The long: Back when the Spanish colonized the islands they were handsome men, with fine, light-colored skin of anglo descent. Filipino mothers wanted their daughters to court such men so they were scolded to stay out of the sun, or they would look like dark skinned peasants, and the men would not be attracted to them. That is my condensed history lesson. Funny how this all still lingers today even when foreigners, kanos, tell them how beautiful their dark skin is. If my wife would lay in the sun for an hour she would accomplish what white girls try all year to attain.

It's cultural. Try 300 years of foreign domination and u get the idea. From 1521 to late 1800s (Spaniards), early 1900s (Americans), Japanese (they're paler, too than Filipinos) in WW2. Somehow people have retained the beauty ideas of the older generation. It's good there's an emerging trend to appreciate natural beauty, though, so no one feels bad about looking like the way nature/God intended him/her to be.

When I see a Filipina with pale skin it looks un-natural. The bronze skin is very beautiful. When you try to make it lighter it messes it up and makes splotches. Smoothness is the key. Whether its a dark tan or a light tan, as long as its smooth its beautiful. Also, don't try to dye the perfectly black hair. Its all a package deal. Just go with what you got is always the best.

I think the real issue is that every person has his or her own standards for beauty, regardless of nationality. It may just happened that most of the Filipinos you know prefer lighter skin. I don't think that Filipinos would want the skin color as light as those of the White Americans, or Caucasians in general. All of the fellow Pinoys I know abhor the "Chorizo"-like skin of the Caucasians, light surface covered with sort of red dots underneath which appears to be kinda similar to that of the Chorizo's. What I know of is that Filipinos, mostly women, and even my wife, would simply wanna have the pale or light brown skin minus the "chorizo" appearance. That, I think, is for them is something they consider as their standards of beauty, which in a way very Filipino. Who else in the world wants the skin to be lighter and smooth, but not as light as Americans or Caucasians, and without any flaw or "red dots" underneath? That is something so Pinoy. That is perhaps why the Philippines has become the target of cosmetics companies, both local and international, as Filipinos have varied and "unique" standards of beauty. You may be surprised to know that Nivea's biggest market for their whitening products is the Philippines and it's also just here where local TV channels are beefed up with numerous competing whitening Papaya soap advertisements. I hope you won't be bothered by the idea anymore why your fellow Pinays here in the Philippines want to be lighter. I think it is inappropriate to say that these women want to be pale like Christina Aguilera. These women just simply want to be lighter, minus the flaws and that would suit to these women's Filipino standards for beauty. Might as well say that Filipinas like to have the skin as light as Sharon Cuneta's or Angel Locsin's, but not Nora Aunor's or Tina Aguilera's.

It's true! I just love my light brown skin complexion!
Anyways, It's because in Philippines the "in" color is light or fair color (white).
Sadly, people will look up on you if your skin color is like that.(white again)
Maybe because the brown color is too common in Phils.
The same thing in other places, white people like to get tan when there skin color is too hot in Philippines/ Asia. What a big joke! Nobody is contented yet on how they looks.

Never heard of it. I've never heard of a white person going "I can't wait to get my hands on some bleaching cream so I can get whiter than a ghost! Yippy!" Paleness is unattractive and very dangerous actually b/c you can get skin cancer very easily. I didn't say white ppl are unattractive, I said paleness. Actually, most American whites are much darker than their European counterparts.

Sometimes people want what they dont have...

Im a Filipina girl and I've seen it all.How us filiipina's like to be really "kikay" and all and experiment with our looks...

Its just like how people with curly hair spend money just to have their hair straightened
&
How people with straight hair want their hair curly...

Its pretty weird because in the Philippines.Girls use a lot of skin whitening products and some people undergo skin peeling just to have a whiter complexion...
&
Then here is a totally different story...when people see the sun.Its such an opportunity to tan...

They like us tan girls :P

I have no clue.

White people wants to get a tan. Filipino people wants to be whiter than their tan.

White people wants a flat nose, Filipino people wants a nose lift.

I guess some people just don't know what they want.
