Make sure that the printer powers up when you press the On/Off button. If it lights up, great! If not, check your power cord to ensure that it's plugged in securely.

Check your connections again. Make sure that the USB or Parallel printer cable is plugged in properly.

If you do a check for new hardware and the computer doesn't find the printer, check to ensure that your parallel printer port or USB ports are enabled. You may have to verify this in your BIOS.

Open the "Printers & Faxes" window, is your printer listed there? Make sure it's set as the default printer. Look for a little black circle with a check mark in it. If not, right click on the printer icon, then select "Set as default printer" from the menu.

If printer isn't listed, reinstall the driver according to the manufacturer's instructions and restart your computer.

It's been awhile since I set up a network printer for someone; but the first thing to do is make sure your printer is on the your network. Is the printer connected to another pc? or is the printer a stand-alone. If the printer is connected to another pc, make sure that Windows (assuming OS) is set up to "share" this printer. If the printer is a stand-alone; an easy way to check to see if the printer is talking on the network is to (1) get the name of the printer (i.e. HP4000) (2) go to Add A Printer -> A Network Printer -> Browse (or) Connect \\server\printer. If you find the printer name, select it. It'll ask you if you want to make it your default printer and you should be good to go (unless I left out a step).
If this printer is direclty connected to your pc, you may need to install the software/drivers that came with this printer. Or simply try reseting the printer itself. Hope this helps.

You might want to try programing it in. That can take up to an hour, but you can always call you local computer guy or the company you brought the printer from!

bad cable? broken printer?
drivers not installed?

usb or parallel ports not turned on in the cmos?

try it on someone elses computer. if it works
its port or driver issue
if not, its a cable or printer broke issue

also, some printers don't work without the black cart in, so if its not, or if its not seated tight, it may not work.
