I'm upgrading to Vista from Windows XP and I know I might lose everything on my C drive, but there's nothing important there. The important things are on my D drive. Will I lose anything?

As long as you install onto the C:\ drive, your D:\ drive shouldn't be touched. That said, creating a backup of everything important is always the responsible thing to do before an OS upgrade.

I wouldn't recommend pulling the ribbon cable from the D:\ drive; in addition to pulling the cable you would have to switch the jumpers on the C:\ drive, and then switch them back when plugging in the D:\ drive again. More trouble than it's worth. In addition, if you do so, you're likely to end up with C:\ and E:\ drives for your hard disks, and D:\ as your CD drive. This may not bother you, but it would irritate the hell out of me. And yes it's possible to change them back using the Disk Management utility, but the point here again is that it's more trouble than it's worth to pull the D:\ drive.

no you wont, but to make yourself feel 100% certain , just take out or disconnect your d drive by pulling the lead off untill after your install.
