Windows XP Professional. Windows XP Home is just a crippled version of the Professional version. Don't buy it.

I'd say go with Professional, since there are some Applications that only work when you have certain Features that Pro has.
Also, Pro lets you change services and other things more easier than Home.
For Example the Connection limit from SP2 can easier be changed in Pro than in Home.
Home is like 95 where Pro is NT...

Depends on your needs. Most of us are typical home computer users, even if we use advanced programs. We don't need the special security and networking features of WinXP Pro, so why pay the extra for them? I happen to have and use both versions and cannot tell the difference, as far as performance (just some minor cosmetic differences).

Before you ever buy the "more expensive" version of anything, from cars to software, ask yourself if you really need all the features available before you buy them. You'll save yourself a lot of money over time, allowing you to ungrade to a newer version a lot sooner.

They are the same Operating System. One is not more crash prone than the other or faster. The only noticeable difference between Home and Professional is... Domain membership - Home Edition cannot be used to logon to an Active Directory domain. For obvious reasons, the Domain Wizard is also missing in Home Edition.

for complete comparison, refer to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.mspx

if you intend to use for home usage (sufr net, watch movies, listen music, rip CD), Home version would do the job, some additional features you can obtained by using 3rd party software

these things you will miss if you don't use professional version:
- joining domain capability
- Encrypted file folder (you can still use 3rd party software)
- IIS for web publishing (you can use apache in Home)
- Remote Desktop (you can use VNC or PCanywhere)
- other things stated in the document which i and probably you don't understand (i guess we won't miss it that much =) )

Which is better? It all depends on what you need.

If you don't need the advanced networking features in Pro, then save your money and go with Home.
