I heard that sometimes parents will put a couple of drops of alcohol in their babies bottles so that the baby will sleep throughout the entire night. Is that true? do parents actually do that? and is it safe for the baby? I asked my mother and she was disgusted, she couldn't believe that people do that. and yet I still wonder....

That is wrong! There was a girl who put vodka in her babies bottle and the baby died. and she though she was only going to help the baby sleep. This just happened about 6 months ago, she was convicted of murder I believe. If you know what alcohol does to you or anybody else, just think what it could do to a baby even if it is a few drops. Don't wonder..........don't do it. If women wanted to sleep through out the night and stay in bed as long as they wanted to, they shouldn't of had kids. Having a baby a child is a gift, someone you cherish and love. Not harm or shut up because someone doesn't want to deal with him/her.

I'm sure someone somewhere has done it - but it is TERRIBBLE for the baby. Even a few drops can affect their tiny, still developing systems, especially the brain. Moms that drink while pregnant can cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, what is to say putting a few drops in the formula will not do the same and cause developmental delays or retardation.

Do you have an infant? Are you having trouble getting them to sleep? If so, are you on your own or do you have someone to help? There are many things you can do to help with sleeping, but not alcohol. My daughter had her sleeping switched when she was born. She wanted to be up at night and sleep in the day. It took us 6 months to get her switched from nights to day! Email me if you would like some suggestions. Good Luck!

Back in the old days if a baby were teething parents might rub bourbon on their gums because it supposably helps with the pain and would make them sleepy so they would sleep through the pain. I don't think they'd give it to them in their bottles though not to say that some irresponsible parents don't do it but, I know they used to use it as a home remedy for teething. Me, personally wouldn't take the chance with my precious little daughter because you never know how their little bodies could react.

A friend was breastfeeding her son (20 yars ago), and he was very colicky. The doctor told her to drink 4 oz. of wine, and it worked like a charm. They were young and naive, so when he was still colicky after being weaned, they put a couple of drops in his bottle. They figured it was the same as getting it through breastmilk. Well.... it made the poor little guy drunk, so they didn't do it.

Out of ignorance, I might understand it. To get extra sleep - now that's just plain selfish.

Yes they do this and there is NOTHING wrong with it. BUT..you shouldn't do it just because you want it to sleep. It should only be done when the baby is sick and is unable to rest soundly because of it (usually with a bad cough). This has gone on generation after generation and only a TINY bit is used. But this is not to be done on a regular basis. It is just an old remedy to help a sick baby and it works.

Just looking at how people say it is dumb and will kill a baby if you do this. Apparently you people must be thinking of giving a baby a shot-full in a bottle. There is NO harm in putting 2-3 drops of liquor in a full bottle for a sick baby. I work at a college where everyone has Ph.D's and many have worked as social workers and they ALL say that they've done it and what they recommend. What do you think cough syrup is???

My aunt told me that she used to put a little wine in my cousin's bottles when they were babies. That was 25+ years ago and things were different then. My cousins turned out fine. However, I'm not endorsing the practice, as it could be quite dangerous.

it is not safe,
it is very easy to overdose a person with a body weight of 10, 20 30 lbs.....
secondly, if you drug them, it impares their ability to flip over, so they could roll on their face, and not have the panic wake up reflex.
they could stop breathing.

now that being said,
my parrents dipped their finger in whiskey and rubed it on our gums when we were teething, to sooth the pain,
I do not reccomend it, but none of us were killed by it anyway...
