Here's my opinion...
1. People (young, old, educated or not) can cast a vote for something they feel is important.
2. The players that aren't playing or taking part in the skills competition can show how much money they get paid by sitting on the sidelines dressed in their Versace suits and Armani dress shirts.
3. It gets all the best players from the East and West to come together and unite momentarily, before they go out and try to injure each other during the remaining third of the regular season.
4. It gives the camera guys an excuse to keep showing Eva Longoria, like she's an actual player on a team, or something.
5. Oh yeah, it makes money. Almost forgot.

The reason there's no defensive or drive is that its supposed to be the only break during an NBA season and the players want to relax. Also they dont' go all out during all star games because its not worth getting injured and missing the playoffs because of this. And also it doesn't always end up lob-sided. Last yr's all-star game was a thriller until the very last minute when lebron blocked T-mac. I do agree with you that this yr's all-star game was boring, but your bound to have one boring all-star game in every few years, after all, its not rigged to make it close so if a team has a lot more talent liek this yr's west, its gonna be a boring game.

its a game for the fans.
The fans want to see the best players on the court doing crazy things.

Playing defense doesn't allow for "crazy" passes and shots which really attract the fans.

When people are paying 3,000$ per seat to watch the Allstar game they dont want a game that's 80-92. They want a game where they can OOOOHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

the more outrageous the score the better.

Look at shaq trying to shake Mehmet! that was hilarious!

one of these "let loose" games are good for the NBA

the NBA all star game means the all stars players playing together in a conference team against another conference team. They playing there for the money, not win the championship or game there. They can show people their good skills as 3 points shootout and slam dunk.

the all star game is pretty much just for entertainment they bring all the best players and let them play against each other kinda like a scrimmage but its just mainly for entertainment thats why u see so much dunking and nice moves and they dont really care about defense or anything

No one wants defense in an all-star game. If you ask me there was not enough show boating and trick plays.

The game is supposedly for the fans, but then why hold it in a non-NBA city?

The game is a joke, of course. And why would any basketball fan want to sit though a halftime show like the one they had this time? Wayne Newton? WTF?
