If you want to watch intelligent thoughtful educational television turn to PBS. Last night I learned all about raptors and other birds of prey. I had no idea they dove toward their prey in a corkscrew fashion to keep their best eyesight (from a 45 degree angle) focused on the target.

Oh, it's not just American TV, it's everywhere. Even the BBC which has long been considered to be the highest standard is slipping badly.
And it is always detrimental to society, no matter how good the programming. At the most simplistic level, even when the programming can be considered to be worthy, it is never going to be as good as meeting up with people and discussing things. If the programme was talking about global warming and we discussed global warming with a group of people later, we have still lost the time in which we were watching the programme when we could have been out first discussing the economy and then global warming. This presupposes excellent programming.
In reality, the programming is never even remotely worthy. And in addition to this, there are so many stations that to even find friends who watched the same thing so that you can discuss it is forever getting smaller.

Everything is about making money when it comes to children they will watch anything and beg you to buy the toys so the more they put in different various even though its all the same plain plot children have to have the cow toy, the pig toy, and the banana toy. Only thing you can do is limit what crap they actually watch.
Then for adults they just have to have flashy commercials get people to watch and advertisers will pay the rest.

It's not the shows themselves so much as their had are tied by the federal communications commission. The religious right in the past few years have had willing partners in both the congress and the white house that has reduced the artistic abilities of the screenwriters and producers. So, we get the milquetoast crap that goes for television today.

The media does have a certain amount of responsibility in terms of the messages that they send to people, but everyone needs to stop taking the easy way out and blaming the media for every problem that they have. Parents need to be more involved in their children and educate them and take an interest in their lives and adults need to grow up and take responsibility for their own actions.

It really has less to do with the actual shows than you might think. The act of watching television is detrimental to society. It turns off the critical faculties, encourages passivity and erodes the capacity to use language correctly.

The reason our shows jokes are about sex, and crude humor is because that's what the majority of our population enjoys watching.
