I don’t really think that the line of demarcation between liberals and conservatives has to do with the fact that one fears internal enemies, while the other one fears foreign agents. I think both fear internal and external competitors. The distinguishing factor is that each designates something different to be the internal enemy, and each defines an external adversary differently.
For liberals the internal enemy are those forces that seek to impose personal morality in the form law. Hence, those who endeavor to legislate matters pertaining to same sake marriage, abortion rights, and stem cells are considered internal agents. External opponents are those countries that seek to siphon American jobs away from people on the home front.
Conservatives, conversely, see as domestic opposition those who seek to subvert traditional cultural and morality through the promotion of lifestyles and entertainment that is inamical to the fundamental mores that they perceive this country was built upon. So ideas about the seperation of Church and State, television that glorifies same sex relationships, etc. would constitute internal enemy contrivances. While foreign enemies come in the form of illegal immigration, and of course foreign militaristic hegemony.
Its odd that both conservatives and liberals seem to agree that the loss of American jobs to foreign countries, whether skilled, or unskilled, is something negative, and yet even on this area where there is agreement, not much is being done about it. This just goes to show you that no matter how rigid the doctrinal lines are between conservatives and liberals, and how differenty they view enemies from within and from without, the political bargaining done by representatives in our government, ultimately negate the interests of either side of the political spectrum, even if there is a consensus among them concerning a particular issue.

The difference is that Dems ignore existing threats and undermine efforts to combat them while Conservatives support methods that actively and aggressively fight against those threats.

Look, it was a shock to the system when Darth Vader posing as Dick Cheney scaring the crap out of everybody running as his evil self ruling the brainless egomaniac and winning! Nobody knew what to do with that. Drag Charles Manson out of prison and make him a candidate? You see they took their eyes off the true essence of the inherent evil of the pair. The election was rigged! That was the confusion...Mary.

No one uses fear like the Conservatives. They have people in this country afraid of everything including Liberals. It is sad what they have been preaching.

Nope, I'm not afraid of the differences. What I'm afraid of is the fact that libs (Dems) and cons (GOP) are too similar in America, leaving me with ZERO choice!!

The difference: Conservatives are afraid of change. Liberals are afraid of being dragged back to "the good old days" (that weren't so good) by irrational conservatives who are afraid.

The difference is that conservatives create new threats, ignore existing ones and create domestic threats in order to quell hysteria of foreign threats. Dems fight clandestinly against foreign threats and ensure domestic liberty.

I am afraid of both! We should have our guard up against those who would attack us militarily, and those who would attack us by eliminating Constitutional rights, that millions have died for!
You act like they are mutually exclusive!
