Frequent exposure and repetition is part of the learning process.
Look for toys/educational aids that your brother can interact with with or without supervision --- you don't want anything that will break easily or be a choking hazard...check the age appropriateness. 3D or textured surfaces invite baby to touch and enforce shape. Devices that talk can enforce names of letters, numbers and shapes when parents (or caring siblings in this case) aren't available. An oldy but a goody are colourful shape sorters.
MY WORST PURCHASE: inexpensive over-sized fridge magnets from walmart (magnets did not support the size of the letters).
MY BEST PURCHASE: Leapfrog's Fridge Phonics - says the the letter & sound, numbers, alphabet and counting to 10. Worth the cost. I like a lot of Leapfrog's products actually.

Song and dance are the best ways to teach at this age. Hopping around like a maniac singing the ABCs or some made up song about animals will be fun and it won't be long before he is singing along. He won't yet know the significance of the letters, etc but as he gains knowlege he will only have to remember all the wonderful songs you have sung with him and he will be that much ahead. If nothing else, you will have great memories.

when you are with him, constantly point out the shapes and colors that you want him to know. ask hiim if he knows what color/shape something is, wait a second, and then tell him.
sing the abc song to him until he can sing it with you and then start pointing out letters, telling him what letter it is and what it's phonetic sound is (for instance, "that is an A. it sounds like "ah")
children respond well with genuine interaction, you don't need a lot of fancy toys. those foam puzzle pieces with letters on them are great because you can learn colors with them now and use them for letters later.
also, you can cover the shower wall with shaving cream and let him practice making shapes -- this is easer for a child than practicing with a crayon because their fine motor skills aren't as developed. i would recommend this for maybe a 2 or 2.5 year old, who doesn't instinctively put everything in his mouth. when youare done, just rinse the wall off.

My nephew is 2 and he knows his abc's, can count to ten and knows all his colours and shapes! What we did with him was just showed him things like letters and numbers everyday, and then we'd review... we would see a big blue balloon or something and we would say... "Kayden, what colour is that?" and even if he got it wrong, we'd say... no Blue! So, then he started to get it. Then with the letters, you show them letters (maybe get an alphabet book) and go through it all the time, make it something that you do a lot. After a while you can say... A is for... Apple. (etc.)
We got Kayden to do it with family names... M is for Mom, K is for Kayden... etc! Or even pets names ... that way he was a little excited to learn!
Kids love to learn, so just find a way that suits you! If he gets frustrated, don't force him, it might make him not want to do it and stall his learning. Good luck and have fun with it!

Hello, I agree that the Baby Einstein would be good. But, just be patient with him. Remember, he is only 14 months old, and his attention span is very limited. Personally, I would start with basic colors, then move to shapes, then numbers, and then the alphabet. You have to go gradually, so he is not overwhelmed. Hope this helps!

I've heard the baby Einstein movies work wonders. Babies love the music and colors. Also it teaches them in about seven different languages.

Sing the ABC song to him. That will hold his attention and eventually, he will sing with you.
I made up songs for my kids when they were babies and taught them to spell, learn their numbers and ABC's.
It's never too early.
The Baby Bee videos are good too

books!!! There are so many picture books out there that kids love to look at! You can show him the animals and tell him their names and what noise they make. It's a lot of fun and eventually he'll remember what u told him and he'll "read" the book to you!!!
