Naming of astronomical objects falls squarely under the jurisdiction of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). They do not name stars after people. Galaxies, galaxy clusters, and nebulae of particular note are sometimes named after their discoverers or the telescopes with which they were found. Any website or organization that claims to be selling star names does not have the authority to do so officially. What they will do is send you a nice certificate and publish your name in a catalog which no one will read. As all published books are, this book will be in the library of congress. This does not mean that congress has endorsed or is even aware of the contents.

Asteroids are named after people. If you want to name an asteroid after someone, here's what you do: if the university in your city has an astronomy program, ask them if they have any sort of outreach for amateur astronomers (they probably will). You can then get involved in a team that looks for asteroids. If your team discovers one and is able to describe its orbit, then your team can name it after a person. After you've helped out for a while, you'll certainly get a chance to choose a name or two.

I guess, you cannot name a star unless you discover it. That honour is presumably restricted to the discoverer. And to discover a star u need sophisticated telescopes, computers, years of training and study and hard work etc.etc - a really costly affair indeed. Both in terms of money and time.
But I am talking about astronomy - not the "stars" of human societies. These other stars can be named after (or before, ha ha) someone without spending anything !!!

It's 50 to 100 dollars depending on which scam artists you go to.With all the companies doing this, I suspect that a given star has a bunch of papers associated with different people. The companies have no authority to give a star your name. If you'd like, send me half what they charge and I'll print out a deed for you which is all they do.

Doesn't it have the same effect as buying land on the sun? Is this for you or a girl? If it is for a girl, just tell her that the third star from the left is hers and you named it after her. Then take the money you saved and buy her a nice dinner.

It would be easier just to change the person's name to the star's name. Like Betelgeuse.

It's not a scam, just ask my buddy Sirius Johnson, he did it. Also Betelgeuse Cramer did too I think. That Betelgeuse, what a character.
