First of all, calm down! It's standard practice in any industry/job for employers to check out references, after all it's to back up your claims at the interview! If you're in the UK then legally your current/previous employer cannot give you a bad reference. Using friends in generally prohibited, so they could be checking that out. But it can take a while to get references through, so please don't panic. If you haven't heard anything within a couple of days, give the HR department a call to find out what's going on. Hope this helps and I hope you were successful!!

It depends on what happened during the interview, in particular what you said when this topic was raised, and how badly you want the job.. if you gave no indication of your disappointment when you heard what they were offering and said yes then you still have options but they are high risk you can call the interviewer and say there are a few things you want to discuss - something positive about the job, taken from their web site. - then one more thing, ' you've been doing the sums about cost of living and thinking about their financial offer, and were wondering when and if the salary was negotiable at all and whether you could come back to this topic after the trial period?' The danger is that they say ' are you still interested' to which you have to know your answer. you can say 'yes of course - its just what with the cost of living etc you hoped they don't mind you asking, because money is important. after all' or 'well it does make a difference- and given that its a job you want for along time its important to understand their process' which means that you send a signal you might withdraw The risk is that they hired you because you were "cheap" and that means that you have a black mark. will you stick around, are you worth training etc there are jobs these days where the pay is going down like journalism and call centres key rule - if you are making a mistake, stop, reconsider the choices, pick the best one, and then do it. don't take the job if you are worth more...take it the relief if you are desparate and keep searching good luck

they should be able to get back to you within a week or two max but if you're worried, i dont think there's anything wrong in calling them and say you are just enquiring if they have recieved your references. they will see you're keen and don't let on how stressed you are about getting the job.
if you get a bad ref theres not a lot you can do except maybe if you know a professional e.g. teacher, lawyer etc who can give a good character reference instead or also when you give your previous employer as a reference put the contact name of someone you got on with there or who you can still talk to and get them to write a glowing reference.
hope you get the job. good luck

I would ring your new employer and ask them whether they have managed to get your references or is there anything you can do to speed the process up.
If the worst happens and you have been given a bad reference you can take whoever has given you a bad reference to court and they must justify giving you a bad reference.

Hi
I have just been made redundant and people that I worked with were all worried about getting new jobs and our previous managers giving us bad reference's, but apparantly previous emlpoyers cant give bad reference's.
You will get the job and the reference's will be fine.

I don't understand. When you say that they have offered you a job, to me, that means that no further hurdles exist to you working at the job.
I'd give them a few more days. My standard question in any interview is: When will I hear back from you/What is the next step?

I would wait until Friday, if you don't hear by then there may be a problem. If you got a bad reference you probably will not know about it.I feel confident you will be hired for this position. The important thing to remember is to stay calm and be patient.
