The issue is not the time of day but simply getting enough exercise in the first place, so I emphasize finding the time that will work the best. Any exercise is better than none.
A second factor might be your energy level at different times of day. If you are a “morning person”, you might do best at that time rather than later. Many people have job or family constraints. You might be able to get away for a brisk walk or a trip to the gym at lunch but not in the evening. There are other considerations. As the weather warms up, for example, a workout in the early morning or evening may be more practical than mid-day.
Assuming you have the luxury of choosing your time and no time is much better than another, there does not seem to be a clear answer but rather a range of opinions. One argument is that by exercising in the morning, you increase your metabolism during the day. Another is that your muscles warm up as the day goes on and that you can do more exercise in the afternoon or evening with less risk of injury.
So it's really your choice...

I believe you are trying to lose weight. If you are the morning is the best. You see say the last time you at was 6:30 pm and you wake up at 7:00, you technically have been fasting for 12:30 hours! Your body has used all its carbohydrate stash. So all it has to burn is FAT! You would not be able to get this effect in lets say the afternoon without 30 minutes of exercise first!

The most important thing to consider is what time would work best for you and be most convenient. Yes if you work out in the morning it will boost your already high morning metabolism and allow you to burn more throughout the day, and if you excersize at night it will alow you to continue burning a greater amount of calories as you sleep. No matter what time you work out there will be some kind of benefits, just make sure you are working out.

I know what this is going to sound like but, here goes...
I found this really great book that answers all the questions about burning fat and feeding the muscle written by Tony Neruto. It answered all the questions I had about different types of foods that raise metabolism etc. It even gave me information of when the best time was for ME to work out. I hope it helps you too. Let me know what you think.

I heard in the morning because you get your heart rate fast and speed up your metabolism....but since I have a 9 to 5, I work out after work, and try to burn off the calories I've consumed during the day.....

I really don't know but I have heard that the morning is the best time because it gets your metabolism speeded up for the day and gets you going, giving you more energy throughout the rest of the day (which helps you in more ways than just losing weight).

In the late afternoon. Your muscles have already warmed up enough as to prevent injuries when working out. It can also help you rest better at night.

Halfway between meals, but not evenings, since a workout can keep you awake and sleepless if taken after 6 p.m.
