depends on your personal taste. There are a lot of geres of anime. I like the stories of The Avatar, Full Metal Alchemist, and Trinity Blood. But for GREAT:
AKIRA, Initial D, Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, Noir, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in a Shell, Trigun, El Hazard, Princess Mononoko, My Neighbor Totoro, Blue Submarine No. 6, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky (any movie by Hayao Miyazaki)

Good luck and explore everything. Great source on a budget: Blockbuster, or even the library.

Totoro is my favorite Anime movie - and appropriate for very young children. (or me! I'm a grown-up if you go by age . . .) (Anything by Miyazake is GREAT! Did Howl's Moving Castle - recent US release 2 years ago?)

I like both some movies and some series - age and interest are what you need to share to get a better targeted answer.

Do you like action? Fantasy? Elves? Spaceships?

Do you want to watch a movie first - not much of a commitment - or a series (some are VERY long, some moderate)
