The Fairmount Park System is big and it's hard to come to Philly without visiting some part of it (the Art Museum, for example, is technically in Fairmount Park. Rittenhouse Square is part of the Fairmount Park System and definitely worth seeing)

There are really nice recreational trails along the Schuylkill River (although that could be kind of cold this time of year) http://www.fairmountpark.org/RecreationMain.asp

There are museums

There's art

And squares

Check out this map of parks and recreational facilities that are part of the Fairmount Park System.

I hope this helps you decide.

Fairmount Park is a beautiful place to visit. When I need to get "out of the city," I head to Fairmount with a blanket (in the slightly warmer months, of course), and I could just spend the whole day there. There are also good trails for hiking. Great architecture! It's very scenic - good for a run. The art museum is nearby (very nearby!) as well as the Philadelphia Zoo! Boathouse row is beautiful at night!

The park is a wonderful place to visit! It's enormous - several times larger than NYC's Central Park. The zoo, ball fields, boat house row, bike paths, hiking trails, the new Please Touch Museum, are all inside the park. There are also several 17th century mansions in the park - some of the tour bus companies include the park.

To the best of my knowledge, there's really not a whole lot to it. Tons of fields and some old architecture, but nothing worth noting. You could make your way to Kelly Drive and take the scenic view along the Schukyll River to the Art Museum, but outside of that, I really can't think of any other reasons to head up that way.
