The Ten Greatest Classic Rock Drummers of All-Time?
The local “classic rock” station here in Toronto is called Q107 and from Monday to Saturday, I pretty much ignore it. Really, how many times can you really play “More Than A Feeling” in one day? However, on Sundays, I can spend the entire day by my radio and enjoy almost every second of it (besides the commercials, although I like the ones for “The Friendly Stranger: Canada’s First and Finest Cannabis Culture Shop). Sundays in Toronto are known as Psychedelic Psundays, hosted by Andy Frost (surely the classiest DJ in the world) and running from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The show features some of the lesser known tracks by the big guys (you’ll get lots of psychedelic Beatles, early Floyd and early Who, live Hendrix, third album Zeppelin, etc.), plenty of stuff by the lesser known bands (Spirit, Love, and Lighthouse all see regular rotation) and lots of great one-hit wonders from 1965 through 1975. After Psychedelic Psundays end, Jeff Woods comes on with his wonderful “Legends of Classic Rock” which in the past, has featured themes like “Rock and Roll and Religion” and “Death in Rock”. Today, Jeff and the people at the Mighty Q created a list of the 10 greatest classic rock drummer ever. The list, of course, means nothing but being a drummer and a big fan of criticism myself, I decided I’d run through the picks and make a little comment for each one. Enjoy!
10. Mitch Mitchell-A good pick, although I would have put him higher. Love his jazzy flair and he really did add a lot the sound of the Experience.
9. Phil Collins-I’m not denying his ability or anything but Bill Bruford or Carl Palmer would have definitely been a more appropriate pick.
8. Ginger Baker-I guess he’s deserving of a spot, although I do consider him highly overrated. He used the cymbals well enough and he’s jazzy so that warrants a spot.
7. Alex Van Halen-I HATE Van Halen and therefore I hate Alex Van Halen. Not worthy of this list either as pretty much every other drummer from the 80’s (Ozzy’s drummer (name escapes me), the guy from Guns ‘N Roses) could play just as well as him.
6. Stewart Copeland-The most distinctive drummer I’ve ever heard. Lots of splashes and high tom-toms in his stuff and super-fast. He’s also super-melodic, a rare attribute for a drummer. Kind of a cocky bastard though.
5. Charlie Watts-Hmmm, a little high, no? Sure he’s the human equivalent of a metronome but do you think he could handle “Close to the Edge” or even “Won’t Get Fooled Again” for that matter? Neither do I.
4. Keith Moon-My favourite drummer of all-time. I’d have put him at number one for his sheer uniqueness (people copied and copy him left and right but he was the first drummer to play like a Keith Moon) and for living the wildest lifestyle of any rock drummer (rock star?) ever.
3. Ringo Starr-I knew it was coming but I still had to shake my head. Yes he was solid as a rock and yes he inspired millions of kids to play the drums (including me) but that doesn’t make up for the fact that Ringo is only on this list because he was a Beatle. Low in the technical and flashy departments. Number 10 would have made more sense. A hell of a likeable guy though.
2. Neil Peart-I’m not a big Rush fan but I’ve got to admit that Neil is one of the best technical players ever to play. I also like his really big drum-set cause it’s big.
1. John Bonham-I swear to God I’m gonna punch someone! Not that I have anything against John Bonham or his drumming. He’s definitely one of my favourites. I dig his sound and style and I would have put him at least top 5. But does every chart Q107 make have Led Zeppelin at number 1? Would you believe that they did a similar list for singers and Robert Plant came out on top! Led Zeppelin were great but they are certainly not worthy of topping any list that has to do rock music.
