I've been trying to catch my blood (not menstrual blood) in a small cup, but it has proved to be difficult. Does anyone know anything that would help me to do this easier? thanks. :)

Do not try to extract it yourself with a syringe unless you know exactly what you're doing. You could hurt yourself very badly.
Next time you donate blood, ask them to give you a vial of it "for your records" in a purple tipped vial. The purple tip has preservatives in it.

Use a clean syringe, pull some out of your arm.
It's not hard.
