I can't prove this but I believe the answer is yes. Sometimes during the last month, when my four month old baby has been sound asleep, she has woken up screaming with a look of real fear on her face, and then fallen peacefully back to sleep as soon as she saw that one or both of us were nearby. My husband and I have both seen this happen. On one occasion I saw her laugh in her sleep when she was sound asleep.
Again - just my feelings as a mom. As far as I can tell this is all happening about the same time as she is realizing on some level that we are separate from her. Most of the time now she cries if I am not visible to her. I feel like she is probably having something like dreams about us either being there or not being there.

Yes babies in the womb experience REM sleep and therefore dream.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_eye_movement
"A newborn baby spends more than 80% of total sleep time in REM (see also Active Sleep ), while people over 70 years old spend less than 10%. The average is 20%."
http://www.ewtn.com/library/PROLIFE/zunbrnsns.HTM
"In 2000, professor Rivkees of Yale University showed the presence of a day-night rhythm from the midpoint of gestation. Today we know that from the 28th week of gestation the phases of sleep can be differentiated. From the 30th week, active sleep is present, which is equivalent to an adult's REM sleep, when most dreams take place"

Yes, I believe they do, because dreaming is where your memories are formed and when a baby like that is learning so much it must dream a lot

Yes they do. My son dreams about fighting or being attacked because he punches alot and it's not like the misc punching that babies usually do. I don't think he dreams of being attacked because he doesn't cry.
He also laughs in his sleep. This usually happens when I'm holding him and I laugh.

I believe they so because all 3 of my children seemed to dream when they were babies. They would have many reactions when they slept.
