San Diego is really safe from snakes, but you will find garter snakes (harmless except the fright) in older neighborhoods - Talmidge, Kensington, Clairemont Mesa, etc. If you don't like rattlesnakes, they have been found in the canyons throughout San Diego, but it's fairly rare. To avoid them, don't buy or rent a house within a block of a canyon. The warmer the weather, the more active snakes are and the more likely you will be to find them lounging on a rock or a path. You will find more of them the more rural and farther east you go.

The only place I've ever encountered a snake in the San Diego was walking down the paved road at the Torrey Pines Reserve. There was a rattler in the brush on the side of the road and it scared the heck out of us.

Everywhere, but they are generally shy and it is rare to find them in very populated areas, although not completely unheard of. The only ones you really have to be careful of are the rattle snakes. King snakes are not poisenous, although they can still bite you. I have saved 2 rattle snakes from my back yard and relocated them to a canyon.

San Deigo is a great and safe place. It's very clean and protected. Just watch your steps when you go hiking or mountain climbing. Usually there's some rattle snakes but apart from that you shoudl be good :) !!

The hills near La Jolla and Mira Mesa have rattlesnakes. I've seen a baby rattlesnake.

Basically all of the canyon areas, especially ones with dense brush and vegetation. I;ve never seen a snake in the wild down here, but every year the media says to watch out for snakes in canyons and San Diego has a lot of canyons.

Rattlers are everywhere inland in the hills, such as Miramar and Poway. Be careful, especially in spring when the babies are out, as they don't have rattles and they are much more aggressive than adult snakes.
