I think it is ok for them to help the border patrol, but if congress would get off their duffs and do what they are supposed to do to help fund the border patrol and support them, there would not be a need for the national guard to help.

Protecting our security is actually one of the valid powers given by the people to the federal governement. That our borders (including our all ports of entry) are not secure is a travesty against the citizens of this country. That the federal governement is not doing whatever is neccessary to patrol the borders is almost treasonable.
The federal governement has resources to accomplich this, if there were a political will in Washington to do so. The fact is that congress can appropriate enough money to properly staff the border patrol and their failure to do so simply contributes to the problem they are condoning by their inaction. If only a tiny fraction of what is budgeted for entitlement programs were redirected to secure our national ports and borders, there would be more than enough funds to cover the expense. And spending our tax dollors that way would find no objections from me.
The federal governement shouldn't have to send national guard or regular army, but if the funding for adequate staff and material isn't going to go through congress, then YES, the federal government should utilize both the regular army and the national guard to accomplish the closing of our ports and borders. Our porous ports and borders are in fact national emergencies and that is a legitimate use of our armed forces. "...in time of war and national emergency..."
The last time I checked, anyone who is a member of either the regular Army OR the National Guard are there voluntarily. It is a choice that they made. I do not minimize their sacrifice, in fact I honor their patriotism and duty. And, our government should take whatever measures necessary to ensure that their patriotism and duty are rewarded to the highest level possible.
But please don't imply that either the Army, National Guard or ANY of our armed forces have "done enough". ENOUGH is when they have dischared their full duty and that is whatever our federal government deems necessary to secure our nation.
This however, is NOT a problem of how our armed forces should be deployed. It is a question of how far down the road to socialism our elected officials are willing to take us in order to remain in power. Take THAT off the table and replace it with men and women who actually place the best interests of our COUNTRY at the forefront, and our borders would not be an issue at all.

Absolutely, and if they need additional help, after that, then the US Army. It's in their charter. Just like National Waters falls under the Coast Guard and the Navy.

No, it is not their role, and I don't want the Guard in my state taken from doing what they are suppose to be doing! Not doing another entities job at my expense! They already spent 2 straight years in Iraq and were in Desert Storm! I think they have done enough!
They have tried to support their families on a military pay when many had good jobs with high pay! Pretty difficult to lose everything you own because you belong to the guard!

Yes of course, they should also just build that wall, very high, along the entire border, and impenetrable, with guards and vicious dogs will land mines that will blow up but only blow up with bright orange paint that WANT wash off for months.to mark them ,they should shoot them with rubber bullets, when ever they see one.in our country trying to get in,ALL the Mex neighbours I have or nasty stealing weird creatures, i don't want any more around me.The government should do its job and protect us from the invaders, theirs a lot of criminals coming in along with terrorists.I want them gone .all the illegals, they should spend a few billion of our tax dollars to round them up .put them in tent city camps out west for two years then let them go back home, this is NOT their home, it is MY home.God Bless America.

It shouldn't be necessary if congress were to fund the BP adequately and staff it to the levels where they can better do the job.
