I hate needles and I faint everytime I have my blood taken. I need some tips on what to do today to get ready for tomotrrow. Do I need to eat anything in particular or drink anything?Also-if they refuse to take it from my hand(I have excema inside elbows) or use a butterfly needle-do I have the right to tell them where I want it taken? Also-how can I ask for the best nurse without sounding rude? thanks

Look as far as asking them to do it where it will not hurt you you have the right to do that. Just tell them that you have trouble with blood and they will have the best person do it. The Dr. usually does mine because I have small veins. As for coping with it. This will be one of many times that they will stick you durring this pregnancy. You need to look away and keep breathing. Just concentrate on in and out... Breath in and breath out... no matter what do not look. You will be fine!

Take something with you that you can stare at or even somebody that u can talk to while they are drawing your blood. This won't be the only blood test you'll have to take during your pregnancy,so you have to show some "Balls",also because you are going to be a mother!!!
They'll know where to take the blood from, elbow, hand etc. When they see the right vein ,they go for it and the butterfly is used also on kids.so the needle it's not like the one they use on elephants..haha
Don't drink or eat anything after midnight, you have to go there with an empty stomach, but make sure you'll bring a snack in the car so you can eat something on the way back home.

Just relax and don't eat or drink a whole lot. If you get naseated while you're there, you could vomit, so just eat something light before going.

Never look at the needle, and i'm sure they're going to give you someone that knows what they're doing...so i wouldn't even worry about that part, but just make the comment to your doctor that you would like someone with a few years of experience.

Ask for a wet cool rag to put on the back of your neck or over your face while they're doing it....that's helped someone i know.
And just see where they say they will take the blood from and if you don't like it, make the suggestion of where you would like it from and they'll tell you if that's possible.
Good luck, there's nothing to it.

You need to be upfront with them let them know how much you are scared. When you sit in the chair make sure not to look at the needle just close your eyes think good thoughts. I use to be really scared but when I got pregnant after the first couple times they took blood it became better. You can ask it isnt rude because you are scared. And if the person doesn't hurt you, you know for next time.

It really isn't all that bad. They take it with a small needle that is attached to a "tube". They took all three vials at the same time and the process took less than a minute.
I can understand the fear of needles... but you have to remember that later this year you will be having a baby and that is way more painful. Just think of it as a learning expreience...
Plus I thought it was kinda neat watching the vials fill up.

You have the right to have done to you ONLY what you will allow. If they cant provide something for you, like a butterfly needle, or a draw from some place else on your body, then you can seek medical care elsewhere.

You really need to get over your fear of needles. Pregnancy is all about being pricked and poked. You'll end up stressing the crap out of yourself and being miserable at every appointment because you cant handle a pin prick.

Try some hypnotherapy or something like that, I hear it works wonders for people.
