I had that problem when I was on the Atkins diet a few years back. It was caused by a lack of potassium in my diet. May want to eat bananas or take a potassium supplement. If you don't believe low potassium is the problem, you may want to schedule an appointment with your doctor.

I am a 57 year old male that works in an office and with no history of night time leg cramps.
About five years ago I began getting severe night time leg cramps, some would last for an hour and I felt the effects for two days afterwards.
They occurred most often in the night after I worked outside in the yard (Georgia in summer).
I do not know the causes or anything, but when I drink a sports drink after the cramp starts, it goes away fairly quickly.

They could be. Dehydration will cause your electrolytes to become unbalanced and that can cause muscle cramping. Your electrolytes are Sodium, Chloride, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium.... essential minerals in your diet. A lack of Sodium, Calcium or Potassium can cause muscle cramping.

"Charley-horse" type leg cramps (sharp feeling, often after exercise) are caused by electrolyte imbalance. Dehydration is one kind of electrolyte imbalance, but they can also be caused by not eating enough of other electrolytes like potassium or calcium, or by sweating so much that you lose too much salt.
On the other hand, "restless-legs" type cramps (creepy, crawly feeling, almost always at night) are caused by misfiring motor neurons. This is a neurological problem, and can often be relieved by mild exercise (like walking) or massage before bed.

all of the above are great answers but don't forget the most important one of all in my opinion, get a simple test for diabetes. I'm a diabetic and if i get good control on my sugar no problem. but do occasionally get the painful cramps. try the test and see ,as remember theres 2 million undiagnosed diabetes in america. and look at all the poor people losing a leg or legs, so go for it.

Yes it can be. Try a re- hydration sachet from the chemist that you mix with water....you only need to take this for a couple of days to get things back on track.
A re -hydration mix is best because it contains the body salts you need and it is a lack of these that causes cramp.

I have the same exact problem! It's so annoying! I can't get any sleep. Sometimes it's in my feet other times my calf. I think it's from not having enough exercise. The muscle gets pulled out of it's normal limits and to stop it try massaging it or bending ur feet back. It WILL hurt for a while but it stops a lot quicker.

yes,
or there is one other problem
and it would be serious.
there could also be a blood flow problem
when you lie down,which would be along the lines
of clogging arteries or veins,the walls are actually collapsing
when you are at rest.
I think ist called leg apthia or something like that,
but I would see a doctor soon.
