No, you are not entitled to any more than what your typical company policy is. (Many companies give up to 3 days.) They were probably telling you that you could take (unpaid) time if you weren't up to coming back right away. Some companies wouldn't be so kind!

Not necessarily. some companies don't have bereavement time. those companies who do have a limit. I used to work for one company who allowed only 3 days and when my grandma passed I had to use sick leave in addition to the 3 days used. I currently work for a state agency and there is no bereavement time set aside. If I wanted to take it I would either need to use sick leave or leave without pay. I suggest you check the leave policies with your company.

sorry about the long answer

Unless it is specifically spelled out in your contract or the employee handbook, no. You could use vacation time, if you have any, so that you get paid, but it sounds like you have an understanding boss who wants you to take care of your personal business so that you can come back and do your job well.

Paid funeral leave is not required, and not even offered at most employers.

It's up to your employer how much time and pay you are allowed when off work for a family bereavement.

I was allowed just 1 paid day off for my Gran's Funeral. But my Dad was allowed 10 paid days off to help my Mum and Aunt sort some of my Gran's things out and attend the funeral.

Typically paid time off for bereavement varies from company to company. Check your employers policy. Where I work it is 3 days and then any additional time off comes from vacation time or personal time.

The best thing to do is talk to your supervisor and/or HR rep to verify what is meant by "as much time as you need", because even though you have suffered a loss...the company still needs to move forward and it is best to get any uncertainty resolved.

I don't know but this woman at work is getting time off to go to her fella's dad's funeral. She's only met the dad in December. It's not fair. Still I can always go "sick" if I fancy time off that's not annual leave.

I don't think you are entitled to pay, just to not losing your job.
