that your neighbor was selling for only a few dollars, apparently not aware of it's true value, would you tell your neighbor, or would you just quietly buy it and cash in on the item yourself?

I agree with crystal s. I would buy it and then let them know the value, and that you will be giving them half.
If you don't buy it someone else will, so do the right thing and share the wealth with them.
You will be able to sleep easier at night.

How do you think money is made??? By paying someone its value and selling it for a price no one will pay? No my friend. You snag that lamp - pays yo money - then go sell that lamp for the going price.

THEN - visit your neighbor and rub his or her face in it, maybe even do a victory dance as you see this poor soul's blood drain from his or her face.

I'M KIDDING! Yes you buy the lamp for the marked amount and make money on it. BUT only an idiot would brag on the deal with the neighbor.

A FRIEND however - is a different story. A neighbor would cut you very little slack on such a deal if the roles were reversed.., but a friend should help another friend - elsewise, whats the use in having friends. But there's oportunity to pull a prank on a friend if you buy something of no real value from a friend, tell him later you made $1,200 off his $2 junk lamp.., and make up some story how it was owned by Abraham Lincoln's son, Todd...

Depends, if you socialize with your neighbor and consider yourself friends, you should probably at least discuss the fact that the item may be worth a bit more than a couple bucks, Odds are if they didn't show interest in antiques they wouldn't know what to do with it anyway. If you are merely "say hello at the mailbox" neighbors, buy it and Cash In !!!!!

This question is sort of mute. If you and the neighbor had been such good friends you would have been in the house of this neighbor.

You would have recognized this item before and mentioned it to them.

So I would take it that you were not good friends and since knowledge is power and they do not have the knowledge and I do, I'd purchase the item for my use and if it turned out to be as valuable as thought all is mine to keep.

I'd buy it. Garage sales are an ebayer's dream come true.
It's not up to me to educate him on his items. If he was really interested, he would have done the research himself. By displaying his wares on the street, for everyone to view and buy, it's open season.

Sorry if this sounds callous, but that's life. It's not like I went into his home and tried to talk him out of his valuable antique for pennies. I'm not taking advantage of him. It's his choice to sell the item and my choice to buy. I don't owe him anything.

I would buy it! Then after i got my $$$$ from selling it i would go back to my neighbor and give them a little piece of the action,that is if i liked the neighbor if i didn't like em i wouldn't give them a cent!

That depends on you... What are you prepared to live with? Would you by it if it were a stranger? Would you tell the neighbor about a mistake if it wasn't something you could profit from?

Well; knowledge is power, research is paramount, ethics is necessary when you are licensed and law applies here in that an offer is made to you and you accept it and tender the asking price. The rest is not up to your preacher or priest to tell you but for you to decide. What if you're wrong?

If the neighbour was a friend, I would tell him, If not I would buy it.
You have no obligation to tell anyone about what you think of what they are selling, but I think for the sake of friendship, the high road should be taken.
