You don't need a greenhouse to grow tomatoes. I grow them in the back garden each year. Start from a good quality brand of seed - any cherry tomato will yield lots or a salad tomato such as 'moneymaker'. I sow indoors (kitchen window) and gradually thin out by taking the 16 best plants and putting into pots (4 per pot) then picking the strongest 8 of these to put into growbags when weather is good. They seem to like sun, heat and humidity so this can be achieved with an inexpensive growing frame or even a large plastic sheet with a few airholes propped around the plants (but not touching them). Another tip is to pick off unnecessy leaves - they grow one strong leaf from each juncture on the stem, when another leaf grows from the same place, pinch it out as this uses energy that could be going to making the fruit.

i start mine in the house in a tabletop greenhouse. i start them in the "plug" type flats that i recycle from the annual plants i bought the year before from local green houses. as they out grow those cells, i transplant them to 4" pots. by the time they out grow these, its time to plant outdoors.
i found a real great article in Mother Earth News, about two or three issues ago, that might help you. Also try Totally Tomatoes. they are a seed company that carries almost every tomato and pepper I've ever heard of and then some! both have .com!
have fun and enjoy!

You do not need a green house. When you plant them outdoors make sure that there is no danger of frost though. Tomatoes are very sensitive to the cold. You could use a wall of water around them, it will speed up growth. You'll find these at any nursery.

You can buy a kind of grobag for tomatoes called (I think) a Tombag. They contain all the nutrients the tomatoes need and you can grow them on a windowsill or in a conservatory. Instructions on the bag. Available from garden centres or B&Q or Homebase.

Not at all. The worlds crops of tomatoes that you buy in the grocery are grown in open fields.

Of course it depends on what state you live in and when you wanted to start them.

But you can grown tomatoes in pots on a porch, veranda or balcony.

In the summer it's not so necessary but with a greenhouse you can maximise the length of time you're able to pick tomatoes from the plant. Plus you're protected from bugs and birds who love eating them too!

Tomatoes need warmth and sun and lots of feeding.

There are varieties which can be grown outdoors, but they must be in a sunny, sheltered position.

You'll get bigger and better fruit, for longer, growing them in a greenhouse.

No, just somewhere sunny. Tomatoes are great to grow on balconies or even window boxes.
