I have had 3 kids. 2 born in march and all of them in Indiana. Unfortunately for you, the weather is never predictable here. For my first, I was glad that I had a snowsuit when I left the hospital, because it had snowed 5 inches the night before (it was march 11). I would buy a snowsuit and then also a jacket. The baby usually is in sleepers most of the time, but when going out make sure that you either put them in outfits with footies or shoes. They sell shoes at Target and such pretty cheap this time of year since they are getting rid of their winter stuff. You will also want layers. Onesies, long sleeve shirts and jackets. That way if it starts out cold, but then warms up it is easier to take off a layer. You probably won't need shorts. If yours are like mine, they were out of 0-3 before it got warm enough for shorts. I would stick with long pants, long and short sleeve shirts, and jackets.
Now for girls (I have 3!), you will definately want tights if you are going to put them in a dress. Almost every Easter but one, we had jackets or coats on the girls. I found at babies r us a really cute outfit that was dressy, but a pants outfit. That way my baby didn't freeze and I didn't have to deal with tights. When my first was born I put her in a beautiful dress for Easter. She had 2 blowouts that day and went through 3 pairs of tights. At this age, tights are hard.
For the most part, except when they are really young (first month or so) dress them as you would yourself, with just maybe another light layer. Then if they seem to be hot, it is easy to take off. Remember, that when sleeping you may dress them warmer just for the fact that they will kick off the blankets. Then they are cold.
Good Luck. Gotta love that Indiana weather.

You know, there just is no pat answer for this question. You just have to pay attention to the weather and the forecasters and then decide what to put on the baby for that particular day if you are taking them out side. March is usually windy, so I'd make sure the baby's head was covered, with a receiving blanket or quilt, regardless of the temp because the wind can affect the baby's breathing--they'll gasp if the wind catches their breath. I would always keep a hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants in the diaper bag. That way you can pull it out if the weather changes quickly and the baby's head/ears will be covered and the baby will be cozy. Some Moms just keep a baby this young in the 1 piece sleepers because of all the spit ups, etc. and they can be easily changed. Think layers--I really like the hooded sweatshirts. Congrats and best wishes.

It really depends on where you live and what the weather is like. March here is the beginning of spring. My daughter will most likely be wearing regular spring clothes with a sweater. Some places it is still kinda cold in March. Dress them the same way you normally dress. If you need a sweater, then they need a sweater, etc. etc.
I live in Illinois. The weather is about the same. I'm gonna say buy a long sleeved outfit with pants. And make sure you have a warm blanket. My daughter was born in April and I thought it would nice and warm, so I bought her a dress. It ended up being cold & rainy and the fleece blanket we bought was a good idea. Always assume the weather will be totally different than normal. Better warm and toasty, than cold.

Always have a hat and a blanket on hand. The hat should always be on their head...thats where they lose their body heat from. In june/July, a receiving blanket should be enough. I would put the baby in a onsie, and a sleeper or little outfit on top. That way, you can always remove the top layer if it gets to be too warm. My rule of thumb was to always dress my kids in one more layer than I was wearing, its the safest bet. Also, socks are a big thing...the feet is another place where they can lose their body heat. If you are feeling hot in shorts and a t-shirt,its likely that your baby is feeling hot in their clothes as well. Just look at what they're wearing. Everything will come to you...its just mothers intuition. I wouldn't worry too much, onc your baby is here, you will always know what to do. On the off chance you don't, there are tons of places...like yahoo answers...to ask for advice. Good Luck and Congratulations!

My baby was born in March last year and it was quite warm then in the Midwest, unlike now! If you are not leaving the house, onesies with some pants and socks will work fine. A lot of times we just had her in a onesie and covered her with a blanket, she stayed plenty warm. For night we used baby sleepers, there are the thick polyester kind and the thin cotton ones and baby gowns. For going outside those baby bags, like a sleeper but no leg openings worked really well, plus baby likes to be able to put her legs together and feel her skin not clothing, it reminds her of being in the womb.

Newborns need to be kept slightly warmer than adults. They don't retain their heat as well as adults, but they also don't have fully developed sweat glands, so you don't know if they are over heated. For inside, I'd suggest gowns for the first couple weeks. The kind with long sleeves. And you'll need socks for the baby. You may also want a hat. A light cotton one like one they give you in the hospital will be fine. Also, long sleeved and footied pajamas are great. I also used to put a onesie underneath if I thought it was chilly inside.
For outside, you'll need a warm one-piece cotton or fleece "snowsuit" for the baby to wear over his clothes. They are nice because they have feeties and "mittens" that fold over. You'll also need a winter hat for the baby and take a blanket with you to throw over the carrier for to-and-from the car to the house or store. As the weather warms up and your baby gets bigger, you can start judging their temperature according to yours a little more. Usually, though, I kept a onesie on under my son's clothes, even in warmer weather. If he got a little warm, I could take off his T-shirt and he's still be comfortable. Good luck and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

They do not need to be warmer but not bundled too much. March is a hard month. You will need pants some short sleeves and sweatshirts with zippers. When you go out you should have a hat to protect ears. Not a heavy winter hat if it is not cold but they make cotton hats that fit over their ears. Just always take a blanket with you and try to think of what you would be wearing. They should need the same. Layering that time of year is best!

The sleep and plays with the feet in them are wonderful. It keeps their whole body warm, I put a onesie one underneith you should be good with this until summer when just a onesie will do. This is mostly what is available for newborns anyway you may see some cute dresses around for Easter but that's really only one day and on most days a one piece sleeper will do you fine.

i most definitely don't agree with the person who says you should dress your baby the way you dress. babies always need to be warmer then you are, especially newborns, some one once told me before i had my first that YOU ALWAYS WANT TO HAVE ONE EXTRA LAYER OF CLOTHING ON YOUR BABY THEN WHAT YOU HAVE ON, and its always worked for me, plus if they get hot you can just take things off. And always use blankets (whether its a light or heavy blanket) when caring them outside, to block sun, wind, etc. Your baby would have just came out of this warm cozy place, and to make them happy and comfortable you want to keep them warm. but like everyone else said it depends where you live.

agree with kim with the one more layer rule, Its 70-75 ish out today where I live too but kind of breezy and I put my son in a shortsleeved onsie under a long sleeved onsie and pants. Maybe a short sleeved onsie pants and a little light jacket or something. I wouldnt do shorts or a dress there temperature is different than ours.
