The last week he has been waking up every 2 hours. She will let him fuss but will not let him cry for extended periods which I agree with. I don't think babies should be allowed to cry for long periods of time without comforting. She is just confused why all of a sudden he is sleeping worse. He is a big baby weighing 17 lbs already but has also grown 5 inches longer. The doctor told her to start him on cereal and she gives it to him at bedtime. I read somewhere that some babies do better if they do not eat more at bedtime and I wonder if she should give him his cereal earlier in the evening and maybe just a few ounces of formula at bedtime. I also wonder if maybe he could be teething. Any one had the problem with your baby sleeping starting this change of sleep habits?

His sleep pattern will change all the time. Many different things could cause it... teething, growth spurt, change in routine... you just have to take it one night at a time. He is changing so quickly that you need to adjust constantly...
good luck!

Hi,
I have a 5 month old boy as well. He did exactly the same thing. The cereal did not make any difference in the beginning, but now (3 weeks later) he sleeps better. I give him the cereal about 1 and a half hour before bedtime, than a give him a bath, than breastfeed and put him to sleep. I also noticed that if I give him both the cereal and the milk right before bed he does not feel well and doesn't sleep good. It's probably too much food for his little stomach. He is still fussing around sometimes, but not to often. I also never let him cry.
Try to feed him that way, who knows it might work for you too.
I also noticed that the rice cereal gives him constipation, so try the oatmeal.
Good luck!

First off, your baby is not that big. I have a three month old and he is 15 pounds, haha.

And my son was sleeping through the night and all of a sudden he started getting up every 3 hours. He also had a cough and was spitting up. The doctors confirmed he was sick. So it is possible that he is teething. You could try keeping him up most of the day and he will probably sleep through the night.

I would figure that if you give them less before bed that would cause them to wake up more and vice versa. Has he been doing this since she started giving him the cereal? Maybe she should put him on rice instead.

Its normal....just as you get used to their schedule, they change it on you. Though, with the cereal issue, I would give it to him earlier in the evening..between 4 and 5pm...it could be giving him an upset tummy..especially if its new to him. Give him 4 -8 oz of formula at bedtime, depending on how big of an eater he is. Teething is also a very good pssibility. He's at that age now, but you may not see any teeth come in for a few months yet. During the day, give him a (clean) cold wet cloth to hold on to, and he will suck on it... it will help to numb his gums a bit. Also, right before bed time, give him som baby nighttime oragel, it works wonders... it takes the pain away, almost instantly, and helps them sleep through the pain, should it return. Before he gets his formula, give him a nice warm bath with the lavender soap, but don't make it a funtime bath. Just relaxing with a lot of cooing, from both baby and mom or dad. As for the crying issue, he has to learn to comfort himself back to sleep without being comforted...or else yo'll be asking for trouble later...but!!! if it is a painful or uncomftorable cry, go to him immediately. Otherwise, wait 5-10 minutes.. if he starts calming down after that time, leave him be. If it makes you nervous, you could always go peek in on him, but don't lt him see you or you may have to repeat the process altogether. I hope this helps and that you and your wife both start getting some sleep soon!
Good Luck

i strongly believe that sleep and food are strongly related and i think your daughter should maybe try giving it 2 him early afternoon as he may just be getting some tummy upset from the "solids" (more like slop than solid). Then it gives his tummy a rest and just top him up with formula before bed. I used formula as milk on the cereal to fill my baby girl up aswell. Good luck to her as i know how hard a sleepless baby can b for both mother and child

It could be him teething, gas, since rice cereal can make babies bloated.. try Malicon drops, they work wonders!! They are especially for babies and can give it to him as often as needed =) with the teething try baby Tylenol or baby orajel... Try these and see if it helps!
