You can use any wi-fi enabled laptop at any public wireless access point. Doesn't have to be a Dell. In my opinion, HP laptops are the best (particularly the business models). Sony and most IBM/Lenovo laptops are too expensive for the hardware inside, Dell customer service is lousy, Toshiba machines are made from unreliable low-quality components, and Macs are just a pain in the rear in addition to being overpriced.

Apple makes the best laptops, but it depends on what you do.

The best company for Windows-based laptops is probably Dell. I would not go with any computer made by emachine or gateway, i have always had problems with them. HP laptops are not bad, I haven't had any problems with them, some people do though. The best thing to do is look around for what you will be doing with it. Get at least an 80 GB HD and 1 Gig of RAM.

For internet, i think all laptops nowadays have a wifi card built in so you can get internet anywhere there is a wireless hotspot (www.jiwire.com).
