If watching television increases the risk of Altzheimer's disease with each extra hour of viewing among people age 20-60, and causes permanent eyesight damage and /or type two diabetes (according to a report published today), what are the likely effects of computers on a society where people spend most of the working day in front of a computer screen? Is the world going to be filled with obese, senile, blind and diabetic people, since now even infants are computer proficient and start using them in primary school, and many people have abandonned their television set in favour of their computer as a recreation?

I'd say no. Watching TV is a very passive activity, where as using the computer generally involves you thinking, so it would have the oppisite effect on Altzheimer's. I have not seen any statistics on damage to eyes or diabetes (seems strange unless coupled with obesety and sugar consumption).

One bit of research without any reproduced results by other studies, I wouldn't panic yet! It makes good headlines so the media will blow it up out of proportion, saves them having to find any real news!
I still mourn the passing of good investigative journalism!
