"Not black enough" means that he is acting outside of the black cultural norms for his group (whatever those may be). In the early 1970's, a similar expression was, "He's an 'Uncle Tom'", meaning that he was co-operating too much with the whites or acting too "white".

My mother says I'm not "black enough" because I'm learning Japanese and I'm not interested in Africa. It means if a black person isn't "acting black." This is total BS, however.

Thats funny :)

I have no clue... as it all varies from idividual to individual

SOmeone once told me that I wasn't black enought... I found it hillarious as I am 100% black :) and that person was mixed with something...

and I've been told the opposite :) That I was a little too pro black.

Okay I just don't bother.

I've heard it referred to as one of two ways, both mean.

The first is that s/he's part African-American and part something else (usually Caucasian).

The second is when an African-American lives, works, and hangs out with a majority of people who are NOT African-American (again, usually Caucasian), and in that instance, they mean that s/he is "betraying" his/her race (somehow) by "acting" like a person from the other race.

In both instances that I heard it, it was said by another African-American. And in both instances, it was rude.

I think they are referring to the half Black and half Caucasian mixed folk.

It basically means "He/She is not conforming to the way we want him/her to live his/her life so we don't want to accept him/her"

So it's pretty much just a racist comment
