Accomplishments before AND during his Presidency: WASHINGTON!

Washington set hundreds of precedents for our nation including proving that the President wouldn't be a King and that a smooth transition of power was possible.

Heck, I'd put several other Presidents above Lincoln (like Jefferson). Lincoln didn't do as much for slaves as he is given credit for. Granted, that isn't his fault. Because he was assassinated, Lincoln never was able to bring about the acceptance of blacks into American society. That didn't happen for another hundred years. In fact, after Reconstruction, conditions for many blacks could arguably be said to be WORSE. As sharecropping put them further and further into debt, they essentially became slaves again. Only this time, they didn't even have means for getting food or clothing. Had Lincoln lived, he may have gone down as the greatest President, because he most certainly would have made Reconstruction work, unlike Johnson who failed miserably. Also, those who say Lincoln led us into a war, unfortunately you couldn't be further from the truth. The ignorance of Buchanan led us into war, Lincoln simply inherited the problem (SC succeeded BEFORE Lincoln took office!).

I don't understand your question. If your question is "Who was the greater president?" I'd have to say George Washington. Abraham Lincoln was pretty much a failure for a president. He ran for office multiple times and was defeated. When he did win the presidency, he tried unsuccessfully to unite a divided nation. Instead, his policies brought a bloody war where Americans were killing Americans. Had he not been assasinated, he probably would have gone down in history as one of the worst US presidents ever.

Ultimately, I think it should be determined on the long term effects of the accomplishment and how it affects mankind. I would say between the two of them, I would lean towards Abe and his ending slavery. Now, there are idiots out there who would disagree, but was a pivotal moment in history that we are still fighting today, but think of where we may have been, if the ball didn't get rolling back in the 1860's.

I'd have to go with George. He got our independence, and that made Lincoln and all the things he did possible.
