Why does the music industry categorize bands that are clearly not rock as being so?

eg mc,fly,take that, etc when they are clearly not, and should instead be classed as pop, ?

Becasue they believe they can no longer sell their music to a pre-teen / teen audience and intend to market it to an older audience who are less inclined to buy into 'pop' music and have more disposable income.

Frankly I think anyone who just goes and buys music willie nillie on the basis of an arbitrary categorisation deserves all they get coming to them.

Blame the coked up music executives--many of whom brown-nosed their way into areas of business they have NO reason being in and NO skill at running the business.

Overall, the music biz poured in TONS of $$$$ in areas of "Alternative", "New Country" and "Rap"--and have LOST TONS of $$$$ because what got put out by these "artists" have fallen very short of sh*t! People today are simply tired of being exposed to the garbage hailed and hawked by the music biz; the people want quality.

The music biz's best strategy right now is to go back 40 years to what worked, if they are to survive, and dump both the talent-less "acts" they now are burdened with and fire the "whiz-kid" 20 something year old clueless exec.

The music biz NOW has to look for talent and quality: two things these MBA degreed kids helming major recording labels have NO clue of.

coz ppl these days are so bloody stupid they cant tell the difference between anything. and i got proof: on newsround, the presenter said amy winehouse is a (and i quote) "rock chick". my @r$e its so obvious she's motown/soul etc. *shakes head in disbelief*
