Its been theorized quite a bit.
Its called the "Cosmic Zoo Hypothesis" Google it.
2001 A Space Odyssey was based on that entire idea. In that story the monoliths are Von Neumann probes that wait millions of years on behalf of the experimenter to see if their experiment yields fruit. The wait is about the lifetime of Mankind rather than a single man. Long time indeed.
Heck, South Park had an episode where Earth was one of many popular Television Shows.
That said, a great number of people have considered the idea which is what you asked. You didn't ask if the idea makes sense, you just asked if people had thought about it - the answer is yes.
AZ Imagined - ridiculous notion.... You mean like the idea of a heliocentric solar system? - nobody believed that at first. Or the idea that unseen bacteria cause infection? - doctors didn't even believe that at first and when performing surgery didn't wash their hands. You mean the kind of ridiculous notion where its denied flat out then later discovered to be true?
What's ridiculous is to say something is impossible without really knowing one way or the other. Its rational to consider things, no matter how odd, to be possible (plausible is something different) when you aren't in a position to know one way or the other.
Fine, agrue its implausible. I agree.
Argue its impossible, well, sorry, I have issues with that statement. Nobody knows so nobody (as far as human beings) can say with absolute certainty one way or the other.
Impossible is an absolute statement that doesn't allow for alternatives - absolute conclusions are, shall we say, fr from empirical (ie - observations/experimental) science.
I know you are a scientist by trade, hobby and education. Why does this non-empirical bias eliminating process need to be explained?

hmm an experiment? well no...i actually sometimes think man is actually a product in a cosmic grocery or hardware store..and as soon as it perfects itself will be sold to the highest bidder.
think about the product. mobile, able to adapt to different environments, produces young, and is able to learn...its a great product if you need labor, soldiers, or workers.
the earth is just a great big store, capable of producing just about anything biological. heck, the real reason the dinosaurs went extinct was that the order for 3 billion reptiles that taste like chicken came due for the cosmic bar-b-cue.

Yes, Sci-Fi writers have considered this and have, in fact, written books, screenplays etc. based on this premise.
The best I saw was a Twilight Zone episode by Rod Serling wherein a group of young people get lost while out and about one night and end up in a town that turns out to be paper mache' and cardboard......later they hear this 'roar' which almost deafens them [ which turns out to be the voices of the 'people' above them]...
They were in a type of dollhouse and a very large human like child was playing with them and talking to her mother who was chastising her for not being gentle with them.

Someone has been watching too much South Park.
Actually, anything is possible. Being an experiment of extra terrestrial creatures would be disastrous for humans to know about. This could cause an intergalactic war with much superior beings and our reputation would ruined - if we even survived.
Therefore, if you know anything... i'd keep your mouth shut.

More than one science fiction writer has already had this notion.... Read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy (4 books) by Douglas Adams for a great laugh.

I used to theorize about this as a child - that our entire universe is a petrie dish in some HUGE lab. Recently watch MIB II and at the end they propose the same theory (even though it was a silly film).

Of course this is a possibility. We also know time to be relative. So the experimentor could easilly expirience time differently. But consider the possibility that the exsistence of the experimentor is yet another experiment by yet another experimentor and so on and so on!

It's not the whole Earth, it's just you.
The aliens have abducted you, and you're actually floating in a tank like Keanu Reeves in the Matrix. They're feeding all your sensory inputs and outputs from a big computer.

do you ever think that the sky is just cardboard and that everything that happens on deep space probes and space missions is just goverment/alien propaganda so they can mke money/get people or living things up there to eat?
plus, the universe is infinitly expanding so so is the number of concios beings, and the only reason we haven't discovered them is beacause they are avoiding/ researching us so, there is an infinite number of 'aieliens' out there seeng that you have discovered them, but since destroying you would prove that you are right they are helpless.
