Unless you are a total fanatic your best bet is start in Cairo spend a few days there and see the obvious things like Giza( the pyramids) and the museum, if you want more go to saqarra for the day by taxi and dashur theres also the Islamic sites in Cairo if you want more.
then go up to luxor either by plane ( short flight) about $200 return or night train from cairo. there you will see karnak and luxor temple, the tombs in the kings, queens, nobles and workmans valleys, the mortuary temples of hatshepsut, medinet habu, ramesseum amd seti 1. there is more but those are the main sites. You can also take either a taxi or day cruise to dendara temple about an hour in the car north. Fianlly take a cruise it is the best way to travel up river to aswan and see en route the temples of edfu, kom ombo, and in aswan see philea and finally take the flight to abu simple, if money is tight you can go by coach but it is 4 hours each way.
also the same is true about travelling to aswan from luxor
the main sites i have missed out are abydos and armana. and if you find an easy way to visit them please let me know.
in towns the easiest way to get round is taxi always negotiate your price first in egyptian pounds and for all your party. the drivers are well used to taking tourists to the sites and will always negotiate a days trip ( whicih is really only a monring as they expect to be back by 2pm at the latest,) and lastly the lonely planet guide book is excellent and i never travel with out it.
any questions send them to me

If your looking for something cheap - Taxi's are very cheap, especially to you because your american. (I mean that coz American people get a good salary). However it may be annoying because of the constant change of Taxi's...you may be able to book one to take you all over Egypt but they will demand a bit of money for that. Of course the train would sell you tickets! I mean why wouldn't they? Everyone wants to make money, I thought they would thrust it in your face than not to sell it to you! lol
There are many sights in Egypt :
Pyramids and Sphinx
Sharm El Skeikh
Nile cruise
The culture in Egypt is soo different to American Culture..walk in the street at night time in Egypt and that's when everything comes alive..you will love it I'm sure..
I hope you have a nice time in Egypt which I'm sure you will do!
God bless..!

I am tempted to say "camels" but that's actually only one way to get around. There a are guided trips that follow a certain route round the desert and sights in 4x4's (and sometimes even camels!). These usually go over the course of 7,10,14 days and are guided by locals - I did such a trip a while back through Tunisia and we stoped and stayed in an oasis and tents for the night. It was great. You really should get out into the sahara if you can. And for safety they always do that in groups in case cars get stuck.
You can also add a boat trip on the Nil.

No it isn't true it's easy to buy tickets but you must try to get them at least a couple of days ahead.
Always try to travel by way of the 1st class train you can't imagine what the lower class trains are like!!!!
Train is the best way, unless you are going really far I recommend flying.
Also Taxis are really cheap once you get to where you want to be.
I took a 7 hour taxi ride with 5 people and it only costs me $50
Egyptians are very accommodating to Americans.
Once the train was sold out and they took me right into the managers office so they could get me on the train.
