Why are so many things called "french"?

French fries, french kiss, french vanilla, french ice cream, french doors, french windows, french braid, french dry cleaning, whatever. How many "french" things can you add to this list? And why are they called "french" anyway?

I think that it is because France is thought of as romantic. A french kiss is supposed to be used when in love.
