For some people the placenta/after-birth is very symbolic (of what am not entirely sure!?) For example some cultures eat their own after-birth (as ewes do - have seen this with my own eyes) and some people ask for it back after it has been sent to pathology so they can bury it in some kind of symbolic ceremony. It does sound all a bit yuk but after having 2 children myself, when you deliver your after-birth you are aware that it has been keeping your baby alive inside you - it is such an amazing thought and sad to think that it is just disposed of. Please don't get me wrong I would not eat mine but burying it doesn't sound that mad after all...

Most of the time they dispose of it. But now I think some people actually ask to have some of the afterbirth kept for research reasons. Some research has indicated that they are able to detect disease in children from the information gathered from placenta and amniotic fluid.

Well they usually like to bake muffins with it. Though before it is 'usable' for the muffin recipe a few things must be done to it. First they take it to a busy highway and let it get run over a few times... after that they feed it to a starving lion... you know after it has been processed by the lion for 10 hours they take it back to the hospital bakery. Blend it in a blender for 2 hours. Then boil it in a broth with all the urine samples they get (ever wonder what they did with those??), gull stones, amputated limbs, and the like under a full moon. After that they (taking out the limbs and gull-stones) blend it again and use the liquid, road killed, lion processed, placenta and urine sample broth in the muffins...

That they later serve to you in your hospital breakfast might I add. Sorry it's true =P.

The discard it, if they dont have an incinerator to burn it in, they have is thrown out as medical waste and a company picks it up and burns it at a different facility.

They are incinerated with the other waste - if you want it, you can ask them however and they'll save or freeze it for you.

they run several tests on it to check size shape and look for any abnormalities that could affect the health of both the mother and the baby.
