I am very allergic to rabbits, guinea pigs, cats and some dogs but I have had no problems with my hamsters or gerbils. I really, really want rats but it is not fair on them if I have to return them because of my allergies.

If you are allergic to furred creatures then I would say that you could also have allergies to rats.
My allergies to my rats have dimished over the last 11 years of owning over 200 rats. I took a holistic anti-allergy pill for 5 years and my respiratory symptoms disappeared for good.
In the beginning I found that I was allergic to the bedding I was using for the rats and not the rats themselves. I was getting mild asthma from that, a tightening in the chest from breathing in the dust. Another allergy that rat-keepers experience is itchy welts on the skin if the rat scratches you. This is caused by urine being on the rat's feet when you handle it. This allergy is 100% preventable if you wipe off your rat's feet with a damp cloth before you handle him.

Well you probably are allergic to rats. Because I had two guinea pigs and I was really allergic to them. So I had to give them both away. When I got my two hamsters I wasn't allergic to them but my mom is. There is about a 50 50 Chance that you aren't allergic to them. I hope this helps you.
