I have a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300E and the warning light "Check Engine" just went on. What can I do myself before I take it in to the mechanic?

If you have an Auto Zone nearby, they will check your computer codes for free...It may be something minor or it could mean the impending death of your car! Don't drive it until you know for sure. I had to learn the hard way!

check engine lights are indicative of a faulty sensor... there is a code associated with the bad sensor..your car needs to be hooked to a computer to get the code error ...since this is a Mercedes it's a good bet that you will have to take it to the dealer or someone that does work on Mercedes...places like autozone will not have the right computer to hook up to it...to bad they do that service for free and tell you the sensor that is bad.

It could mean just about anything.

Take the car to Auto Zone and have them plug their code reader into the car to see what needs to be serviced. They usually don't charge for the service
