I do have a little yard it can wander around in when I get home from work so it won't be couped up all the time. Do you think I should buy a monkey instead?

An ostrich?! Isn't that a bit extreme? Ostriches get quite big you know. Taller than a human, and a little yard isn't good enough. They run like crazy, and they need at least like a 5 acre field.

Personally I don't think you should get either one...I think you are asking for trouble and I don't think you know what you are getting into or asking for. An Ostrich can seriously injure you, did you know that they can kick you with 200 lbs. of force. That is like getting hit by a car going 200 mile per hour. Not to mention it is not fare to either animal if you have them as pets. You may want to check your local laws before you think about getting anything like that.

Maybe you should start with a gerbil, til you see if you like looking after animals, and if you do, over time you can work up to a cat ...or kids.

Oh my ... hopefully you are not serious. If you are, then I suggest you look into buying a few acres of land beforehand. Remember they will need to eat aswell.
