i know that plastic is not good for gerbils. but i forgot exactly how bad is it?? i woke up this morning to find one of my gerbils chewing on his plastic house. i have plenty of wood in there for him to chew on, but is plastic fatal for them, or not that serious. i need to know if i should leave the plastic puzzle house in there.

i've had it in there for almost a week and i haven't seen him chew on it, so i thought i was all good with the plastic deal. but im not, so what does plastic do to gerbils??

Yes, I would take the plastic house out. Gerbils usually do not actually eat the things they shred, but if they *do* ingest plastic it can be fatal; the shards will tear up their digestive tract. It's one of those situations where it's never a problem, until suddenly it is. They could chew plastic for years and be just fine, or they could swallow a piece tomorrow and die.

Gerbils don't actually ingest the plastic they just chew it. All rodents chew to keep their teeth from getting too big it is hard to eat. Your gerbils will be fine if you leave it in the cage.

Did the gerbil eat any of the plastic? If he did then maybe you should get him checked by the vet. I have had gerbils and my vet said that plastic might be dangerous it depends on if he eats it or not.

Seriously who cares... gerbils are disposable pets.
I had gerbils that chewed on plastic ALL the time with no ill effects. Anyone that pays for a vet visit for a $3 rodent should be evaluated for a mental deficiency.
