Or do you agree with Democrats that a woman should have a right to choose to terminate a pregnancy in the first trimester?

Yesterday on This Week with George Stephanopolous, Mitt Romney refused to say what punishment should be meted out to women who have abortions. He DID say it should be up to the states, thus implying that the states SHOULD be permitted to PUNISH women who have abortions. Be warned, overturning Roe v. Wade would be the first step toward a new Inquisition of punishment against women by the "moral" right wing in Amerika.

Actually, anti choice people prefer abortion to reamin illegal, thus sending women to their DEATH. As far as imposing fines, no that won't work...unless you want to impose fines on the man who got her pregnant. I heard a UTAH sen say that they are known for their children, so they are trying to get rid of abortion, and impose fines on the doctor and the owman. When asked about a fine for men, he said ABSOLUTELY NOT! "If my wife robs a bank, I am not made to pay for her crime"> And I'm thinking, if you held the gun you would be!

BTW, the next day, a teenager in UTAH was on the news for shooting up his school. This was just last week. i guess they ARE known for their children!

The thing is that 75% of people think that abortion should be allowed in the first trimester and 75% of people think that abortion should not be allowed in the third trimester. Most of the difference is really over what kind of regulation should be allowed in the 2nd trimester. But the extremists on both sides dominate the discussion turning it into an all or nothing issue.

Philosophically, I think it should be an all or nothing issue but realistically, I know that only a compromise work.

Rick N misses the point - if it is banned in some states that means that there will be criminal penalties for people who defy the ban. Which means that either the women who gets an abortion or her doctor is going to go to jail.

No to the first AND the second question. Here's why:
1. Not all Republicans believe that women who get abortions should receive prison time. Actually, most of them DON'T believe that.
2. MANY Democrats believe abortion should be completely unrestricted, and not just in the first trimester. MANY Democrats see illegalizing partial-birth abortion as a sneaky way to illegalize ALL abortion, and will not allow it.

This is why I side with neither. I believe abortion should be restricted, but not illegalized...at least, not until birth control and other contraceptives are 100% effective, and readily available to ALL people who desire them. (In all truth, though, MANY Republicans believe the same way I do. Socially I am a Republican, but because I'm fiscally moderate, I identify with the Democrats on fiscal issues.)
If and when birth control and other contraceptives are completely effective, AND completely available, THEN we can illegalize abortion, as there will be no need for it, except in cases where the woman's life is in danger. Even in cases such as rape, there is the morning after pill.

First, your broad sweeping statement over all Republicans is inflammatory and incorrect.

That being said, I don't think jail time is warranted for women who do this. However, I do not believe we should continue to fund Planned Parenthood and their ilk with public funds. I do not believe that on demand abortions should be available. We've killed 40m babies since 1973, and even Roe is against this now.

What choice does an unborn baby have?

And for the record, an ultrasound detects a fetal heartbeat in the first trimester. That's a life in my book.

Women (aside from the rape and incest incidences) generally have the right to choose not to have sex.

I'm not opposed to abortions of dire medical need. As for rape, why penalize the baby because of the actions of a criminal?

nope. i can not imagine of any u . s . that has a regulation like that. the deed hasn't been done, so there is not any crime. the problem including your theory is that that is not any longer plausible to educate previous life like doubt that someone grow to be easily "planning" abortion if the plan grow to be all in her head. in a homicide, the "planning" area is definitely making waiting for the deed, no longer wondering about the deed. such issues as figuring out to purchase a homicide weapon, hiring an assassin, installation the crime scene, installation an attack, etc. etc. would properly be shown to deliver about against the law. some international locations will prosecute on those expenses. in an area the position abortion is prohibited, if the female pondering abortion would properly be shown to have already consulted medical doctors or offered abortive drugs, then she will be held answerable for her moves. if abortion is legal in that position and she done the above moves and those moves are allowed through regulation, then it isn't a issue.

I just want to point our that there are many, many Republicans who are Pro-Choice. A very small few Republicans think that women that have abortions should be sentenced to prison. That is just ridiculous.
I think this could have been worded better by saying "Conservatives" or even "Ultra Conservatives".
I am a Democrat too, but this type of false statement really polarizes people.

Nothing like a good political lie to get the juices flowing, is there?

Nobody wants women thrown into prison for having abortions.

All we want is for Roe to be overturned and the issue sent back to the states, as was proper the whole time. If the State of California wants to have a little party for each abortion performed, that's up to them. However, if Utah wishes to ban abortions completely, that should be equally up to them.

EDIT: Information_police, if a physician performs a procedure which is criminal, why shouldn't he be prosecuted? Nobody is telling him he MUST open a practice in Utah (for example). If he wishes to perform abortions, he whould move to where they are legal.

I believe in life ( pro-life as a positive , not anti-abortion as a catchword), however, do NOT think this is a partisan issue. Look at it as a life and death issue, and vote your conscience for your candidate based on ETHICS and MORALS in addtional to ability to govern. (guess that leaves Billary out allthe way around).

Both of your choices are possibly based on party platform, but are really
somewhere in never, neverland

I don't think they should be imprisoned, but I think they should watch a video of an abortion first and then decide if they really want one. I saw a video and changed my position on the issue.

EDIT: Looks like there are a couple of people that would like to believe that abortion is a bed of roses or a pretty flower.
