No-Just like we don't need "White History Month" or "Native American Month" What we do need is more acceptance and tolerance of color, gender, size, religion, political choice etc, ON A DAILY BASIS. I also believe that we don't need "Valentines Day" - "Mothers" and "Fathers" and "GrandParents" Days. I think we need to show our appreciation on a daily basis, not just once a year. I do realize that most of that is the media and corporations that have commercialized those days, but that is what has ruined it for Me. I just think that if we all treated each day as a special gift, the world would be a happier, healthier, safer place to be.

Well, its like this. They were slaves in the 1600s to the 1800s, and still after that they were still being treated differently. Its more of the country giving back, repenting for oppressing them for so long. Yes if there was a white history month, people would protest. But its just how things are right now. In all reality, I wonder why they just get a month. Just remind your kids about what these people did, and why they should work hard all year round. Not one month out of the year. I mean, if someone did something amazing for their country, or helped a lot of people they should all be recognized, no matter what the race.

So many people have issues that have evolved from bad experiences as children and or as adults due to the negligence and or abuse done to them by others. We all have difficulty letting go of the past in one aspect or another. It is even more of a truth when considering the history of the African American. A country that was built on their back and blood should never be allowed to forget it no matter what generation they are. We also need to acknowledge the many contributions of African Americans in history the same way that we acknowledge those of other ethnicities. A contribution is a contribution and should be recognized accordingly. In reality the African American culture is a minority in the U.S. and as such it is simple to have the month to honor it. It is the very least society can do given the torture, hate and continued racism that they must endure even in the year 2007.
For those that do not agree; it is your perrogative.

Yes people really do need Black History Month. It should actually be longer, children have to learn about other histories for at least 9 months every year in school. Actually, there is nothing wrong a month of dedication to a race, culture, people, it shouldn't just be Black or Hispanic. Does anyone ever question should that much attentions be place on....say, the Super Bowl, NBA finals.........

No, we don't. Black History Month was created for the same reason as Affirmative action-guilt. Is guilt for having had slavery and segregation. We ignored the plight of blacks so now our country wants to recompense them by giving them a month. How ridiculous is that? There shouldn't be any Black History month or Hispanic History month. I'm Hispanic and I think we minorities are receiving too much special treatment.

Yes...that is the only time that most children learn anything about "black history" the rest of the year is "white history"....If there were more teachers and history books that spoke more of "black history" then we wouldn't need it anymore!

That is a sensitive subject and I agree with you, in a way. Everyone is equal and by saying "Black-History-Month", we are separating people from what really matters...equality. There should be certain days dedicated to great black people, but we are still separating people by race, and that is not right.

No, I think we need to know history better in general. By focusing on black history, you lose all context of what real history is.
