The press says U.S. women are paid roughly 25% less than a man doing the exact same type and amount of work. However, this varies by industry. In certain creative industries such as advertising you will seldom find a gender gap.

Traditionally such behavior was justified by the excuse that the woman had a working husband, so the woman's pay was supplemental income for the household. Today, 50% of U.S. women live without a male in the household, so that story is an old myth.

In addition to all of the above (mostly good answers), the gap would be defined as the difference in pay between men and women in the same job, with the same experience and seniority, the same education, and the same abilities. That is what makes such a gap so difficult to prove in terms of discrimination, because so much of that is subjective. I DO think the gap exists, but employers have justified it for years by saying that women are less likely to have the same work history and experience because of their family responsibilities or that they are less likely to be reliable because of those responsibilities. Those things are less likely to affect a woman's job performance these days, so in reality the "reasons" for the gender pay gap are diminishing, if not nonexistent.

Technically speaking, it is the difference in pay between equivalent persons based on gender. It is usually, but not always, women getting less.
There is controversy about why it occurs:

Something that really no longer truly exists. Women, using misapplied statistics, claim that they are paid less. They don't account for the average career length or the true level of positions. In time, the "gap" will naturally disappear.
