Or did it work because of our OWN resolve and willingness to make the sacrifice? Will the US be able to make that sacrifice for the Iraqis? or will the Iraqis have to make it on their own? If they choose not to, will we continue to force them into it? Or is failure IMMINENT?

I'm far too old to be 'owned' or 'served'. LOL in my day it was 'dissed'.

Commander in Chief doesn't say that everything is going according to plan...funny a college sophmore thinks to have more intelligence than him. (arguably, you still might!) As far as Syria, interesting how they are taking iin ghte refugees and the US is engaging them in talks to stabilize that region.

Democracy cannot be imposed upon a people. Democracy comes from within, by the will of the people. Our fight for our own form of government was because we, the people, wanted it and were willing to sacrifice.

The U.S. cannot "sacrifice" for Iraq in the search for democracy. Only the Iraqi's can do that - the populace must desire it and fight for it.

Most of the counties in that area of the world are not democracies. Those that do claim to be "democratic" are in name only. In the Kingdom countries, the royals still call most of the shots in spite of "elections". In the others, the religious leaders, imams, mullahs rule.

It doesn't matter what any given leader wants - it is only through the will of the people that democracy will arise and be set in place.

Failure is, indeed, imminent - and for so many reasons. You cannot fight a war when you can't identify the enemy and when you don't know where he is. You cannot win against a guerilla war. You cannot win against people who glorify death, their own and others.
And, you cannot win a war when "the people" don't want you there.

We could stay in Iraq for years, sacrifice thousands more of our young people and uncounted thousands more civilian Iraqis and we would be no better than we are today. It is a fruitless war in which no one will come out on top.

That's another reason we should leave immediately.

The Iraquis were given the freedom to design their own form of Government. They wrote their own Constitution. Of course we provided input into the process, but the ultimate decision was theirs. We have not forced them into anything.

Why are so many of you out there such pessimists. We haven't beaten the insurgents down in the space of the time it takes to watch a sitcom and you all think its a failure. I agree we should have been doing things differently over there, but there are many more successes than failure. Its only the failures you hear reported. Don't you realize the only way to beat terrorism is to never back down to it? If we tuck tail and run from Iraq then where will we be attacked next? Failure is only imminent if we pack up and leave without preparing the freely elected Iraqi government to protect their own country.

Outstanding analysis, just as a person cannot be made into someone you want them to be, countries have their own identity and resent foreign powers, no matter how well meaning, from forcing ideologies on them. Why is that so difficult for Americans to understand, when our own history proves it. The waste of our resources and soldiers is intolerable, when will we ever learn. I see your thought, but it's not the same as you would assert . Very simply, someone could ask you. . Do you think all people should have freedom ? And No One should help them ?

Sure, the Iraqi people need to help themselves, but how do you do that in TODAY'S WORLD ?

excellent points, here's hoping failure is not imminent, not jjust for the US, but for the Iraqis for whom life has become wretched misery. hard to see a way forward from here though....

Our kind of government will never work in Iraq unless they decide to embrace it. I think any country would not accept a puppet government set up by another country.

It did in West Germany and Japan. Those democracies were forcibly imposed and thrive today.
