Enter the "Front Door" , and "Exit the Back Door", you know. Its actually for Emergencies! In case of "Fire", you know. I do believe that is what its for anyway. Good Question, however! Smile!!!

The law stipulates that front doors should open inwards so as not to cause any obstruction or injury to persons outside. Doors are easier to close in a hurry against unwelcome visitors too. If yours opens outwards you can be made to change it, especially if there is only a narrow public footpath outside. Most back doors open inwards.

I'm in a flat, but when I was in a house both back and front doors opened inwards. If they open outwards, doors to the outside should be fitted with hinge bolts for security.

In public buildings, the doors must open outwards for evacuation in case of fire. Your home does not have evacuation rules, and has the front door open inward for three reasons... 1) A door opening inwards is more welcome -- your guests don't get shoved away from the house by an opening door. As the host, you step back, and inside, and welcome your guests. 2) Storm doors cannot be operated if the door opens out. 3) A thief or intruder can un-hinge the door (lifting out the pins in the hinges), so your home is safer from intruders with the hinges on the inside. Plus, it's easier to lean against the door (move furniture against the door) than it is to pull it back closed by the knob.

In most houses, all the doors open inwards. In most commercial applications, they all open outwards.
Inward swing doors are more inviting from the outside thus more attractive for residential but unavailable for most commercial or retail.
If you left it to the fire experts, all doors would open outward (part of the code for commercial). This allows for rapid escape if needed. The exception is a slider... best.

In UK I think back and front door normally both open inwards. I think it is so you cannot get trapped in the house by something like snow piling up against the door (or somebody deliberately putting an obstruction there like a log or a brick)
