A 12 foot aluminum boat? I have a person willing to sell me a 12ft aluminum boat with a brand new 4hp motor...Will this be enough to move the boat from place to place with out putting across the lake?

It will work but, you'll be "Putt Putting", a 9.9 would be about the right size, the way to determine an engine on a boat is

1) Power- Do i have enough to get the hell out of the way of something

2) Fuel Economy- I want some speed but, not a drag boat

3) Overpowering- NEVER exceed the max H.P rating

75% of the max H.P. rated on the boat is where you want to be

Example: If a hull is rated for 100 H.P Max. the proper size engine (to meet the above criteria) would be a 75 H.P.

Absolutely. I've had years of success using a 3 HP motor on a 14' aluminum boat. It's a heck of a lot faster than paddling and it barely uses any fuel. Mind you, you're not going to pull a skier with it, but it's perfect for fishing small lakes. Figure about 10-12 miles per hour with a 4 hp.

Its a bit too small for a main motor, but it would make a great kicker motor for trolling, with a 12 ft aluminum. Get a 10 -12 horse for a main and you will have a great fishing machine.

That motor should get you and a friend [or a good days catch around a lake just fine] , but I'd really think twice before heading for salt water and ocean currents.

4hp is very small I would not run any thing less than 8hp a 9.9 would be perfect. 4hp and you will definitely be putting.
