Hmm, Mr Know It All doesn't know it all, as Lexus is the Prestige wing of Toyota, not Mazda.
Mechanically, there really is very very little to choose between the cars. As a general rule, the Lexus just has it pipped for reliability. The two cars really are very much down to taste. The biggest difference is specification, the lexus comes equipped with more than a same price BMW. Both cars are rewarding to drive, superbly built, have silky smooth six cylinder engines and will make you the envy of the street.
The Lexus still has that slightly japanese feel to it, a bit plasticky inside, where the BMW is just restrained style. A little bit like comparing a TAG watch to a Rolex. Incidentally, the Lexus dash is styled on a TAG watch.
lexus dealers are reknowned for their service though, and have achieve more customer satisfaction awards than BMW in there relativley short lifespan.

Well BMW does have an edge over Lexus. But they both appeal to different people. BMW's are sportier and geared more towards performance. Lexus is starting to go this route too but still are known for a more gadgety and cushy ride. BMW offer AWD on almost all of their models and have a broader range of cars. But if you want a nice BMW you will shell out 40,000 easily to get the HID headlights, leather, navigation, etc. Whereas the Lexus comes with these things standard in most cases.

I would go with the Lexus because it is built by Japan and they are known for quality and reliability. The BMW will start having problems after three years or so, but the Lexus will run forever almost. (The older BMW's ran forever and still are running but the newer ones aren't built with that same reliability and after a short time start to have a lot of problems with their mechanics.) I don't know your price range but Acura also has very very reliable and luxurious cars for around $30,000 to $55,000. I would choose a Lexus or Acura, both are Japanese cars, if you choose the right model can be very quick, reliable, luxurious, have a comfortable and smooth ride.
Hope this helps.

I like Saabs, personally. I think they're just a little less cliched that BMW and Lexus, and also, you get more extras as standard whereas with BMW at least, you have to pay extra for every damn thing. Also, they run forever and have good resale value.
PS Mr Knowitall - afraid Lexus is the Toyota Group, but you got the country right.

I would choose BMW because they look faster and sportier. The Lexus ride is too smooth and quiet. You can't hear the engine or feel the road so it is boring to drive. The Lexus is chaper and more reliable but the Bmw is more fun to drive.

I can't say I'd choose either.
Lexus keep failing to add that little bit of extra desirability - they are still a clinically efficient machine with no soul.
BMW's are becoming more machine and less soulful, the styling has completely lost its way, and the insistence on using run-flat tyres and i-drive controllers when there are better, more traditional methods doesn't endear their cars to me. Also, I wouldn't want the rest of the world to think I was one of those typically arrogant BMW drivers.
If I could afford a decent-spec 3-series, I think I'd stick with my Renault Mégane, and have a nearly new MX-5 as well - two for the price of one.

I prefer BMW's because Lexus', like most Japanese cars, are crammed with great technology at the expense of aesthetic appeal. BMW's, like most German cars, combine technology with good design, to create desirable cars. Personally, I prefer Audi's.
